Notes for JOHN WILLIAM MCQUEEN:
Dated 12-25-98 Their life as told to me, by my mother Mabel Clair McQueen Dabney. They were married in 1873 In
Frankfort, Kentucky and shortly after, came to Texas by horse drawn covered wagon. They settled first north west of
Blanket on the Knudson farm.First they had stopped in Fort Worth, went to church there and received a certificate of
membership from the Church of Christ.
NOTE: I believe I gave the certificate to Jim Bob McQueen While living on the Knudson farm they had three children
Clayton, John C. and his twin Clarence, James, Nathan and Ira Quinn. The twin Clarence died at birth, then James and
Nathan died. They are buried in the Knudson pasture. Not to far from the Neely Dabney farm. Uncle John came often to
tend and clean the little baby graves.(Irmas father- your grandfather)
The father John William worked on the railroad, as a railroad was being built west to east of the United States.
What hard back breaking labor! But his was young and healthy and very ambitious.
They moved to the Center Point Community and bought a farm. He continued to work on the railroad. Here Fred,
Humphrey, Mabil and Clair were born. Here they seemed to prosper and do well.
In the winter of 1894, so cold. Father John William was think of a better place, a warmer place, for his family.
That was Clayton, John and Quinn. So they started out for south Texas in a horse drawn covered wagon. Leaving the mother
Annie, children Fred, Humphery, Mabil and Clara on the farm in Blanket. The father John William was with a bad cold when
he left. Annie begged him not to go. The boys wanted to go. They were probably 14 and 12 yrs old, They get as far as
Edna, Texas the father grew worse, took pneumonia and died. Grandma Annie had enough money for her and the other four
children to get to Edna by train. They buried him there at White Cemetery. She was so grieved. She didn't have enough
money to get back home. The Methodist Church people made up enough money to send her and the four young children home by
train. Fred was 10 years old Humphrey was 7 years old Mabil was 4 years old and Clara was 2 years old. There will always
be kindly thoughts in my heart for the Methodist People.
The boys came back 3 months later riving the covered wagon. Grandma Annie and the 4 young children stayed at
the Brewster home unit the boys returned. The Brewster Family was Aunt Mag's parents ( Irmas mother your Grandmother).
They returned to their farm home. Uncle Clayton joined the Spanish American War, Fred and Humphrey went to Arizona to
work in the Gold mines, Quinn went to Raymondville, Texas and joined a fishing crew---Uncle John married Maggie Brewster
and lived near Grandma Annie. Grandma Annie was very poor she would walk several miles to a neighbors house, do their
washing for a pound or 2 of bacon. Mabil and Clara going along. They had friends, the Jackson Howton family. Also the
Witcher family of Brownwood. Who had a dress shop in Brownwood. Grandma Annie moved to Brownwood, went to work for the
Witcher sisters. Minnie, Alley and Ida, as a seamstress. She made dresses and hats for the rich people there. She sent
Mabil and Clara to school. Years passed, she met a man by the name of Haynes. He promised her a better life for her and
her two little girls. She married him and they moved back to the farm. He had beehives and made lots of honey, also a
fine peach orchard. She had a girl child by him named Violet Alene Haynes Who was so beautiful, looked like an angel.
But Mr Haynes didn't do as he promised. He was abusive to Mabel and Clara and Grandma Annie. She had Mr. Hayes leave
with the help of Uncle John (Irmas father your grandfather) He did not insist on any part of her farm. He knew better.
With grown sons that what come to her aid. Grandma then moved to Blanket ran a boarding house & eating place. Her
brother Humphrey Palsgrove came far for a visit. He took Clara sixteen years old to his home in Port Arthur, Texas.
Where she married Collis Haynee and lived a long time. Mamma married my Papa Neely Dabney she was eighteen years old.
Grandma Annie & Violet went back to the farm. Violet went to Center Point School, grew up married Earl Byrd had one
son Dennis who lives in Moab, UT he is seventy-six years old. Violet got a divorce went to Fort Worth to work as a
waitress in a big hotel. Grandma went also to care for Dennis. Violet got sick with tuberculosis. Grandma sent her to
San Angelo, Texas to a hospital for special care. Grandma had to sell her farm to do so, but she had enough money to buy
a small house in Blanket where she lived until she passed away in 1937 at the age of eighty years. Now wasn't that
something else. She did not let anything get down and always found a way out. That Irish determination and spirit. Uncle
Humphrey, her son came from California and sent several years before she died. Cornelia Violet passed away at the age of
twenty-four while living with Grandma Annie at her small house in Blanket. The children of John William and Annie
Elizabeth Mc Queen would be your Great Aunts and Uncles. Note: This letter was written to William S. Mc Donough by
Cornelia Dabney Laskoskie daughter of Mabel Mc Queen Dabney sister of my Grandfather John Carl Mc Queen.
