JOHN LOCK STONE OBITUARY (MASONIC LODGE):
To the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Brethren of Zephyr Lodge, No. 591, A. F.
and A. M.
Your committee on memoirs begs leave to report from all sources of
information within our reach, we learn the following: Brother Jno. L. Stone
was born in Barry county, Mo., on July 18, 1839. He emigrated to Texas in
1845; joined the Masons in 1869; demitted from Hope Lodge, No. 481, and
affiliated with Landon Lodge, No. 814, in Kimble county, Texas. In 1899 he was
granted a demit from Landon Lodge which he filed in Zephyr Lodge for
affiliation, but in consequence of severe bodily affliction he was unable to
visit the Lodge, consequently there were no steps taken preparatory to his
becoming a member of Zephyr Lodge.
Brother Stone was a member of the M. E. Church, South, and for forty years
had stood on the border lines of Christian civilization holding the outpost
against the merciless savage, following his trail, and engaging the foe when
overtaken.
He bore his last affliction with Christian meekness, and died in great peace
at this home in Brown county, Texas, Aug. 23, 1899, surrounded by his children
and their families, and a large circle of friends.
In consequence of the above, your committee offer the following resolutions:
Resolved, First -- That in the death of Brother Stone, Masonry has lost a staunch advocate,
and society an honorable member.
Second -- As a Confederate soldier he was true to his convictions.
Third -- That this report be spread upon the minutes of Zephyr Lodge.
Fourth -- That a copy of this report be furnished the Banner-Bulletin for publication and a
copy be sent to the family of the deceased.
Fifth -- That the members of this Lodge wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days.
All of which is fraternally submitted. Committee: W. H. Shelton, K. N. Coffey and Nat Barnes.
