Born in Louisiana 6 July 1851, Charles Jasper Oglesby was one of Callahan County's early settlers. He was the son of Charles F. Oglesby and Martha Jane Brinkley. The senior Charles Oglesby died in the Civil War. Charles Jasper moved from Coryell County, Texas to Callahan County Texas in 1876 and within a year was permanently established in the Caddo Peak area. He operated a store and post office and was the Caddo Peak postmaster from 29 Mar. 1882 until the post office closed on 30 Mar. 1907.
Charles J. Oglesby and wife Juda Ann Beene
On 6 Dec. 1870 while living in Coryell County, Charles married Juda Ann Beene (b-8 Aug. 1846, d-10 Mar. 1928) and they had a large family of eight children. Three were born in Coryell County, the remainder in Callahan County. The children were:
Lela Elizabeth Oglesby (b-13 Sep. 1871, d-13 Mar. 1934) and was married to William Green McDonel. William's parents were John Green McDonel and wife Margaret Parthenia Clauson. Charles and Lela had 5 children.
Their second child was Willis Beene Oglesby (b-13 Jun. 1873, 27 Feb. 1936). He married Nannie Drue Gist and at least 10 children were born to this couple.
The third child was Charles Franklin Oglesby (b-12 Jun. 1875, d-5 Jul. 1943). Charles' first marriage was to Laura V. Kelly. He married the second wife, Dollie Newton, on 1 Dec. 1901 in Callahan County. There were nine children from this union.
A fourth child was named George Curtis Oglesby (b-6 Apr. 1878, d-17 Jan. 1966) and he married Mary Caroline White of Hamilton County, Texas. He is buried in Eastland.
Martha Oglesby (b-4 Apr. 1880, d-18 Feb. 1960) was the fifth child. On 14 Jul. 1898 she married George Mansfield McGary and the had 6, perhaps 7 children all in or near Cross Plains.
A sixth was Ida Bell Oglesby (b- 1 May 1882, d-21 Mar. 1966) She married Lawrence Abraham Stewart on 27 Dec. 1898 and they had 9 children. She is buried in Admiral Cemetery.
Walter Jessy Oglesby (b-25 Sep. 1885, 12 Jan. 1887) was the seventh child. He is buried in Oglesby Cemetery.
The last child of Charles and Juda is Felix Aaron Oglesby (b-27 Jan 1889, d-23 Jun. 1970) who married Gussie Ophelia Breeding on 22 Jun. 1924. Ophelia (b-4 Mar. 1904, d-21 Nov. 1984) was the daughter of Hugh Breeding and Sarah Haley. Felix is buried in Cross Plains Cemetery.
