Welcome
Collingsworth was created in 1876 from Bexar and Young counties. It was named for James Collinsworth, the first chief justice of the Republic of Texas, whose name was misspelled in the legislation that established the county. Collingsworth County was organized in 1890 with Wellington as the county seat. From 1883 until 1896 the county was home to the English owned 200,000 acre Rocking Chair Ranch. The ranch was sold to the Continental Land and Cattle Company in December 1896 but by 1918, the CLCC and its Mill Iron Ranch had ceased to exist and the county lands belonged to farmers and ranchers with much smaller interests.Resources
