Lea, Thomas "Tom" Calloway
internationally renowned artist, author and war correspondent, died Monday (Jan. 29, 2001) at the age of 93. He was a lifelong El Paso resident. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Catherine Dighton Lea; his son, James D. Lea; his granddaughter, Catherine Lea Faldyn; his great-grandsons, Curtis Daniel Faldyn, Thomas Lea Faldyn and Stephen James Faldyn; and his sister-in-law, Marjorie Lea. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 805 Montana. Arrangements are by Harding Orr & McDaniel.

Survivors include her son, Cayetano Hernandez; her daughter, Ruth A. Velazquez; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a cook and a six-year resident of El Paso. During the Mexican Revolution, she successfully pleaded to Mexican Gen. Emiliano Zapata to spare her brother's life.

a veteran El Paso radio executive, died Thursday (Feb. 15, 2001). He was one of the first advertising salesmen for KTSM-TV when the station signed on the air in the 1950s. He spent several years in management at Tri-State Broadcasting Co. and was the second general manager of KTSM AM/FM. He retired in the late 1970s. He was a decorated veteran who served in World War II and the Korean War. He retired as a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. RODRIGUEZ, SGT RAFAEL OLVERA
30 January 1978 - 12 February 2001. SGT Rafael Olvera Rodriguez was born in Juarez, Mexico on 30 January. He graduated from Riverside High School where he played football and dreamed of becoming a General in the Army. He enlisted in the Army on 6 August 1998. SGT Olvera served the Army with the 2d Battalion, 11th Field Artillery, 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. An Artilleryman by trade, he was assigned to Bravo Battery as a M119A1 cannon crewmember. Noted for his exceptional performance and unwavering professionalism, SGT Olvera was later selected to be the Battalion Operations Officer's Driver. He attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. SGT Olvera's military schooling includes Primary Leadership Development Course. He was also attending Hawaii Pacific University for his Criminal Justice Degree with aspirations to become a Texas State Trooper in his hometown. SGT Olvera's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. Undoubtedly, a role model at work, SGT Olvera frequently spoke of his passion for cars and love of his family. On 4 June 1998, SGT Olvera married his true love, Norma, in El Paso, Texas. A strong and passionate man, he filled his free time entertaining friends and family to bring those closest to him together. He was the oldest of three children and both his parents currently reside in El Paso, Texas. SGT Olvera is survived by his wife, Norma Olvera; his sister, Carmen; his brother, Jorge; and his parents, Rafael and Leticia Olvera. RUNKLE, LEONARD "RED"
79, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2001. He was an Air Force Pilot in WWII. He was in sales for 15 years. He started "Boys Concessions" and was the first to use "clubs earning money." Sun Bowl fans would see doctors, lawyers, and bankers working the stands to earn money for their clubs. The clubs had as many hawker boys as fans the first few years at the football games. He had the whole family, friends, and neighborhood making hot dogs, cotton candy, coffee and donuts at the Sun Bowl Parade. He started and coached Coldwell gray-y in all sports and coached 15 years for Little League Baseball. "NONE OF MY BOYS GOT INTO TROUBLE BECAUSE THEY WERE ALWAYS TOO BUSY." Red helped build the Coldwell Clubhouse and was always adding on to "Red's Junk Yard." He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. Owned Stuart Truck Equipment until his retirement, Red got interested in Model "T"s. He was a past member of the Horseless Carriage Club and the Model T Club locally. Red was past president of the National Model T Club of America for 2 years. He always had his group of Model T Fords and a LaFrance Fire Engine in the Sunbowl Parade. Survived by wife Doris of 59 years, sons David Runkle of Dallas, TX, and Jim Runkle and wife Martha from Albuquerque, NM, daughter Deanna Runkle-Dunlap, granddaughter Melinda Dunlap of Albuquerque, Jennifer and Michael Somuk from England, and great granddaughter Bailey Somuk. 67, passed away at a local hospital on February 18, 2001. Pat was born January 25, 1934 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. She had been a resident of El Paso since 1954 when she moved here with her husband, John when he was stationed at William Beaumont Army Hospital. She graduated from El Paso Community College with a degree in Nursing in 1977. For several years she worked at Eastwood Hospital in the surgery department. She became a member of the El Paso Geneological Society serving in many areas including editor, President, and editor- emeritus of the quarterly newsletter the Rio Grande Researcher. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Christian Russ, her mother, Nellie Mae Woodlock, her husband, John Darrell Baldwin, her sisters, Wilma Ritter, Joyce Schuler, her brothers, Charles Russ, and David Russ. She was also preceded in death by her grandson Matthew A. McQuaid and son-in-law Douglas W. Paxton. She is survived by her daughters Deborah Lynn and husband Martin Smith of Farmington, New Mexico, Theresa Anne and husband Charles Soubie of Heber, Arizona, Rebekah Leigh Paxton of Midland, Texas, Cynthia Marie and husband Mark McQuaid of Boerne, Texas, and Natalie Eileen and husband Rey Cordero of El Paso, Texas. passed away in El Paso, February 20, 2001. A resident of El Paso since 1982. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Anne, and children, Teresa Finken, Linda J. Randall, Mary Russell, Gregory Randall, and Genevieve Howe; and stepchildren Barbi Rakes, John Mark Rakes, Gayle Rakes, David Rakes and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Randall in 1999. Don was born in Michigan, November 20, 1921, graduated from Niles High School, and during WWII, served as a Clarinetist, 328th Air Force Band, and then was assigned the Army Command Headquarters at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. during WWII. He graduated from Michigan State in 1949 on the GI Bill, and worked in the paper and publishing industry in Baltimore and Chicago. He retired as El Paso District Outside Sales Rep for Prentice Hall in June 1988. Don is remembered by his children for passing on his talent for music, his love of camping and the outdoors, and of travel, driving and automobiles. His passion for fairness led him to serve on the Baltimore County Human Relations Commission, and to found the Clinton Iowa Interfaith-Interracial Council. His faith led him to serve in the Catholic Church's Vatican II Movement Finance Committee. In El Paso he served in the choir and in the establishment of St. Luke's Catholic Parish of El Paso. He enjoyed flying lessons, was an avid golfer, and continued to play his clarinet, accordion, and piano throughout his life. His passion for art bloomed in retirement. He was an officer of the El Paso Art Association, where he showed his oil paintings. Alvin was born to Clarence and Ella Parnell in Anadarko, OK October 26, 1920, graduated from Hatch High School and was a fireman and locomotive engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 47 years and 7 months. Alvin was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and served for 9 years as local chairman. Alvin also farmed in Anthony, NM for 45 years. He was a member of the Anthony Rangers, a member of Masonic Lodge 1111 and the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees. (nee Bussing) passed away the morning of February 19 2001 in her home at age 64. Mrs. Akers is survived by her husband, Marvin, of their El Paso home; sons Lewis and John Akers of Santa Ana, CA; brother George Bussing and his wife Colleen of Alamogordo, NM; and several brothers and sisters in law; and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Mt. Franklin Funeral Home on Sunday, February 25, 2001 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be conducted on Monday, February 26, 2001 at the Douglas Street Latter Day Saint Chapel with Bishop Ron Zuniga officiating. Interment will follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. Mrs. Akers was born November 15, 1936 in Chicago, IL to Gladys Melba Bussing (nee Rupkey) and Elmer John Bussing. She was raised predominately in Tempe, AZ where she attended Arizona State University graduating with a Bachelor of Elementary Education Degree in 1958. She and Marvin Akers were joined in holy matrimony, April 22, 1962 in Tempe, AZ. Mrs. Akers enjoyed a teaching career in various Arizona elementary schools, and earned a Masters of Education from Lamar University in 1972. She was a homemaker for 40 years. Her husband, Marvin's construction engineering career took the Akers family to locations in California, Idaho, New Jersey, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Canada. Upon Mr. Akers retirement, the Akers settled in El Paso, the family home of Mrs. Akers father's family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Gladys and Elmer Bussing. Mrs. Akers paternal grandparents, George H. and Mary F. Bussing were residents of El Paso having settled here in 1913 and raised five children. Her grandfather was assistant superintendent of the Mexican Northwestern Railway in the early 1900's and was part of much of El Paso and Juarez history.

He was a Korean War Veteran and retired from Ft. Bliss Civil Service and the Ysleta Independent School District. He is survived by his wife Yolanda C. Aspera of 45 years, sons Edward Aspera Jr. (Kimberly), Daniel D. Aspera, daughter Barbara A. Ochoa (Manny). He was the proud grandfather of Luis Angel, Sarah Ann Martinez, Isabelle Ann and Brandelyn Aspera, brother Daniel Aspera from Klamath Falls, OR. He was an active member in the community serving as Past Cub Scout Master Cedar Grove Pack #57, PTA President of Riverside High School, Ysleta Lions Club, VFW Post #05615, and the El Paso Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. born June 15, 1913, came to rest on Tuesday February 20, 2001. Born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Mr. Ludwig lived in El Paso for 86 years. A devout Catholic and current member of Roger Bacon Seminary, he served on the Building Committee for St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mr. Ludwig worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 48 years, serving as the local chairman and chief negotiator for the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and Blacksmiths. His family was the ultimate joy of his life; his spirit will continue to live on in all who loved him. Mr. Ludwig is survived by Blanche, his beloved wife of 60 years, by his children Gloria and Russell Banister, Robert and Irma Ludwig, and Elizabeth and Robert Lashus; his grandchildren Brad, Denise, Brandon, and Elizabeth Banister, Alexis and Anndreya Ludwig, and Kevin, Jennifer, and Jeanne Lashus; and great- grandchildren Christian, Justin, and Russell Banister. He is also survived by his brother William Ludwig, his sisters Bertha Backer, Peggy Castle and husband Albert Nell Mindmoeller, Ann Sylvester, and sister- in-law Dora Ludwig, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Brother Herff pastored churches throughout Texas for 40 years including being Pastor of McCombs Baptist Church for 18 years. After retirement, he became a member of Mt. View Baptist Church. 78, of Santa Teresa, NM, passed away at his residence Thursday, February 22, 2001. Mr. DeVore was born to Fred and Novella Bell DeVore on September 27, 1922, in Breckenridge, TX. In 1947, he married Jean Lee Moore in Snyder, TX. Mr. DeVore worked 42 years as a trainmaster for Union Pacific Railroad. He is survived by his wife, Jean DeVore, and son, Jerry Udell DeVore both of the family home; daughter, Resa Jean Johnson of El Paso, TX; son, Douglas Matthew DeVore of Santa Teresa, NM; grandchildren, Cassie and Lexi Johnson, Kaitlan, Rebecca and Christina DeVore. TOLE WILLIAM SR.,
born in El Paso, TX, November 22, 1919 and departed this life February 25, 2001, attended the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy and served in the United States Army Air Corps as a bombardier after completion of Aviation Cadet Training where he was Wing Commander and President of the Cadet Honor Council. After WWII, he founded The Tole Company, Automotive Parts Wholesalers and Standard Auto Parts of El Paso, and was selected by General Motors Corp. to serve on their distributors council. In 1957, Mr. Tole was elected Potentate of El Maida Shrine Temple; becoming the youngest Potentate to hold that office after- which, he was elected Director of the Royal Order of Jesters. An active member at First Christian Church of El Paso, Mr. Tole was pleased to have many friends both there and at Montana Street Church of Christ. He enjoyed woodworking, aviation, nature, astronomy, the study of ancient civilizations and photography at which he won local and National contests. Preceded in death by Katherine Blanchard Tole, his wife of more than 58 years, William Tole is survived by his daughters Susan Buchholz of Eldorado, TX, Frances Pagel and Katherine Bridger of Houston, TX, his son Bill Clifton Tole of El Paso, TX and their spouses Walter Pagel, John Bridger, and Florence Tole. Loved by his Grandchildren, Laura Francis, Kevin Francis, Alex Bridger, Emily Bridger, Elliott Bridger and Campbell Tole, he will be fondly remembered for good times sbared with his nieces and nephews in the McFadden Family and the many friends he cherished.
