In the late 1950s, the Army brought him to Fort Bliss and he and his wife, Ru, an Army nurse, fell in love with the El Paso area. After a tour of duty in Korea, he returned to El Paso in 1961 and later retired from military service there. Born October 22, 1906 in New York City, the eldest of three children, he was reared in Andover, N.J. by his mother, Elmira, who was left widowed when he was 8. Known to his family and friends as both Phil and Ed, he was a graduate of what was then Montclair State Teachers College in Monteclair, N.J. A member of the National Guard, he was called to active duty in the Army and went through Officers Candidate School before the United States became actively involved in World War II. Subsequently, he spend most of the war year at the Fort Benning (Ga.) training center and in Washington, D.C. and he remained in the service when the war ended. Following retirement, he taught for 10 years at the Radford School, a private girls school located, coincidentally, near the main gate to Fort Bliss. He is survived by a son, Edwin, also known as Phil; a grandson, Ted; a granddaughter, Sarah, and a great granddaughter, Josie, all in the San Diego area.
