75, passed away on January 20, 2002 in Phoenix, Arizona after a five-month battle with cancer. She formerly lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico and after retiring, moved to Laguna Hills, California, and finally Sun Lakes, Arizona. She was born in Burlington, Iowa on January 24, 1926, the daughter of Jack Orr and Dorothy Clarkson. She graduated from Dixon High School in Dixon, Illinois and attended college in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She worked for many years at New Mexico State University as an executive secretary and ended her working career with New Mexico Governor Carruthers as his scheduling secretary. Betty is preceded in death by her husband Dr. Eugene E. Staffeldt of Las Cruces, New Mexico and her second husband Jack Turner of Riverside, California. She is survived by her husband Evan W. Evans of Sun Lakes, Arizona, her stepmother, Mary Orr and her half-sister Linda Carrillo, both of Bettendorf, Iowa, her two sons Mark Staffeldt of Las Vegas, Nevada and Paul Staffeldt of El Paso, Texas, and seven grandchildren, Desiree, Mark, and Stephan of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jonathan of Los Angeles, California, Jeffrey of Roscoe, Illinois, and Michael and Christopher of El Paso, Texas. LUERA, ROBERTO
"Bobby, Che" passed away last Tuesday night [Jan 29, 2002] at a local hospital. He was 53 years old and a member of the Catholic Church. He was a counselor for C.I.S. (Communities in School) working at Guillen Middle School. Roberto (Che) was a graduate of Bowie High School Class of 67' and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. He grew up in the Segundo Barrio and became active in the Chicano movement of the 1970's. While in Colorado he met Chicano National leader Rodolfo (Corky) Gonzalez and became a poet and educator as a member of the Crusade for Justice. He returned to El Paso to continue his commitment to Chicano issues, and education for the youth of the barrio. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him, his family friends, and his kids (students). We should honor him by continuing his ideas of education for young people, family values and getting involved with your community. He is precede in death by his grandparents Emilio Payan and Maria Payan. He is survived by his wife Audrey Luera. Sons Che Luis Luera (wife Yadhira) Camilo Sandino Luera. USA (RET), 77, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2002. He was born in Ault, Colorado, January 17, 1925 to Daniel C. Zalace and Lydia Schmidt Zalace. Retired from Fort Bliss at rank of S/Sgt. on November 30, 1964 after having served in WWII in the Pacific Theater and tours of duty in Germany and Alaska. In 1948 he married Merlyn (Connell) Zalace. Following his retirement, Mr. Zalace worked for 17 years at White Sands Missile Range. He enjoyed softball, fishing, bowling, an gardening. U.S. Army Captain (Ret.) passed away January 29, 2002. He was born August 19, 1912 in Wichita, Kansas, and had lived in El Paso for the past 46 years. Vernon is survived by his beloved wife of almost 57 years, Marie Eleanor Benson; daughters, Judy Thompson (Patrick), Minnetonka, MN, and LaVerne Gomez (James deVoss), Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren Amy Barlow (Todd), Lemoore, CA; Aaron Gomez, Denver, CO; M Scott Thompson, Minneapolis; and Brian Thompson, San Francisco; and one great granddaughter, Lauren Barlow, Lemoore, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Edward Benson and Amanda Althea Westerberg; brother William and sister Frances. Vernon was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; exhibited a profound love of nature - particularly little-known streams and outcroppings high in the Franklin Mountains - and developed high-level expertise in photography, lapidary and rock collecting. DICKSON, CARL MITCHELL
a long time resident of El Paso, TX, passed away on January 30, 2002 in Plano, TX due to complications with Parkinson's. He was born in Dallas, TX on February 21, 1929. Carl grew up in Garland, TX and was known to many of his friends and family as Sonny Dickson. He served in the Korean War from January 1951 to October of 1952, received an Honorable Discharge, and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and U.N. Service Medal. After his military service, Carl Dickson enrolled at North Texas State College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business. At North Texas State, Carl met Ginger Reasoner. After graduating, they were married on August 26, 1955. Carl and Ginger then moved to Midland, TX where Carl started working for the Travelers Insurance Company. They later moved to El Paso, TX where they lived and raised their two daughters, Michelle and Kelly. He retired after 25 years with Travelers to work for JD William's Insurance Company. Carl Mitchell Dickson was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Ginger R. Dickson. He is survived by his two daughters Kelly Dickson Aguilar of El Paso and Michelle Dickson Curtis of Plano, sister Bette Phillips of Florida and one granddaughter Jennifer Aguilar of El Paso. Visitation will be held Monday, February 4, 2002 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with military honors, Rev. Paul Green officiating.

ASTON, EUNICE A.
90, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2002. Born in Morgan County Indiana. Moved to Harrisberg, Ark and married Ollie Aston in April of 1932. She moved to El Paso in 1942 and in 1944 went to work for Mountain Bell Telephone Company retiring in 1969. She was active with Trinity First United Methodist Church and the Telephone Pioneers and volunteered at The Houchen Community Center. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jan D. and James B. Nagel; 1 granddaughter and her husband, June Marie and Scott Johnson and 1 great- granddaughter, Mariah G. Johnson all of El Paso. Visitation will be Sunday, February 3rd from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Kaster-Maxon & Futrell Funeral Home Chapel. NUNEZ, MR. ESPIRIDION R.
61, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2002 in El Paso. He was a longtime resident of El Paso and an active member of Santo Nino de Atocha Catholic Church. Mr. Nunez was a member of the Choir for Santo Nino de Atocha Catholic Church. He was employed as a Bus Driver for the El Paso Independent School District. Mr. Nunez is survived by his wife, Teresa C. Nunez. Sons, David Nunez and wife Sharon, Ruben Nunez, Eugene Nunez and wife Sylvia. Grandson, Nicholas Nunez. Brother, Felipe R. Nunez. Sisters, Josephina Nunez Rosales de Acuna, Rafaela Nunez Rosales de Galindo, and their families, all of Chihuahua Mexico. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home Carolina. Recitation of the Rosary will be Sunday at 7 p.m. at Santo Nino de Atocha Catholic Church. 74, was born in Bisbee, Arizona, October 18,1927 and passed from this life February 1, 2002 in El Paso, Texas. She was a homemaker and a gifted musician offering her music talent as a piano instructor. She was also an artist and a soloist. She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years. Samuel Dominguez, Sr.; her son, Samuel E. Dominguez, Jr. and his wife (Rosemary); her daughter, Ruth Ingram and her husband (Erwin). "Pat" went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 3, 2002. He was a 59 year resident of El Paso and a 30 year member of Templo La Hermosa. He was a Sgt. in the U.S. Army having served during World War II at Omaha Beach and Normandy Invasion. He was retired from Phelps Dodge after forty years service. He was preceded in death by his oldest son Orlando Martinez and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Velia Martinez and five children: Olivia Jepson of Phoenix, Arizona, Olga Andrews of Washington, D.C., Oscar Martinez of El Paso, Texas, Osvelia Murillo of Phoenix, Arizona, and Oswaldo Martinez of Phoenix, Arizona. "Our country is in mourning for a solider died today...." 83, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, February 2, 2002. Thomas was born in Martin, TN and was a resident of El Paso since 1962. SFC Martin joined the Army on April 6, 1942 and served his country with tours of duty in Australia, New Guinea, Philippines, Japan and Korea. He was a World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam Veteran and received many awards and meritorious decorations. SFC Martin retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service on December 31, 1966. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Elvira A. Martin; step-sons, Luis, Jaime, Roy and Dean; daughters, Mary, Patricia, Tommie and Susan; step-daughter, Sandra; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and a brother, James Louis Martin. BEACH, ELVINA
75, born in Chicago, IL., passed away on Friday, February 1, 2002. She was a long time resident of El Paso. Mrs. Beach is survived by her husband of 38 years, Rex Beach, daughter, Bonnie Newman and husband Jeffrey, grandchildren, Joseph and Laura, niece Mary Hermann, nephews Chester Jr., John and Gary Nawrocki. Also many great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Beach loved roller skating and ice skating. Elvina was a member of the Chicago Figure Skating Club in the 1940's and 50's, where she participated in figure skating shows. Mrs. Beach will also be remembered for her love of animals. Generous to all and especially to her family. She will be greatly missed by everyone she knew. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke Methodist Church. Burial will be at a later date at River Hills Memorial Park in Batavia, IL. Collins, Walter
'Rip' Walt was born in Ajo, Arizona May 23, 1926. Walter was in the Navy Air Corps in the last year of World War II. After college he joined the Air Force. Before retiring 27 years later as a full Colonel, Walt had flown combat missions in World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. In 1963 he was nominated for consideration as one of the original seven astronauts. After retiring to Phoenix, Walt turned his energy to his second love, hunting and the outdoors. He is a founder charter member or life member of many of the prominent state and national affiliate organizations such as Arizona Bowhunters, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society, Arizona Mule Deer Association and the National Rifle Association. In 1995 the Arizona Game and Fish Commission named Walt Conservationist of the Year. In 2001 Walt was inducted into the Arizona Outdoor Hall of Fame. Walter departed on his final flight January 27, 2002 in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 75. He is survived by his son Gregory Collins, daughter Yvonne Colins and husband State Rep Pat Haggerty, daughter Yvette Collins, grandson James Collins, granddaughter Caroline Collins and extended family Joseph Weir, Allyson Weir, Denise Van Brocklin, and Laura Travis. He is preceded in death by two sons Craig Collins and Walt Collins. Walt's final resting place is the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona.

88, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2002, was born on December 18, 1913 in Deming, New Mexico and moved to El Paso with her family in 1918. She taught school for 30 years including 24 years at Clardy Elementary. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Fred K. Sword and is survived by her daughters, Ginger, Patsy, Susie and Jeanie; two sons-in-law, Danny and Richard; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and her sister, Mary Helen. 76, passed away on February 3, 2002. Mr. Miller was born in Detroit, MI and graduated from Bowling Green University. He was a resident of El Paso, TX and Ruidoso, NM. Mr. Miller was a WWII Veteran and served in the United States Navy. He was also a longtime employee of the KHEY radio group. of Austin, Texas, and formerly of El Paso, passed away suddenly on February 4, 2002. Dane was devoted first and foremost to his family, was a lifelong runner and an avid Longhorn fan. Dane is survived by his wife of 32 years, Susan George, his daughters, Stacy George and Kylie George, all of Austin; his mother, Patsy George; his grandmother, Lucille Hunt; and his brothers and sisters, Bryan, Randy and Susan; and Susan’s parents, Robert and Una Leighton. Born on January 4, 1949, Dane attended public schools in Richardson, Texas, graduated from the University of Arkansas and from the University of Texas School of Law. Dane was a partner in the El Paso office of Kemp Smith, P.C., from 1974 to 1998, and at the time of his death was Of Counsel to Haynes and Boone, L.L.P., in its Austin office, where he practiced in the Corporate-Securities section of the firm. "Tony" 68, passed away Sunday February 03, 2002. He was born in Naples, Italy and moved to the United States in 1976. He has resided in El Paso since 1983 and was a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Piccolo was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree. He worked for Arris Corp. (previously Texscan Corp.) for twenty three years until October 2001. Mr. Piccolo is survived by his wife Ofelia M. Piccolo and son Frazer Piccolo. Other survivors include nieces Federica Manna, Valeria De Vitta and Alessandra Merlino all from Naples, Italy. SCOTT, VERBAL E.
71, and LOTTIE MAE SCOTT, 70, lifelong residents of the Cloudcroft area, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, at their home in Cloudcroft. Both were members of pioneer families that came to Otero County in the late 1890s. Verbal was born November 4, 1930 in Mayhill to Irvin "Doggie" and Lillie (Gililland) Scott. Lottie was born July 12, 1932 in Cloudcroft to Carl Wesley and Ora Aileen (Bookout) Hansen. Both were graduates of Cloudcroft High School, Verbal in 1948, and Lottie in 1950. They married May 20, 1950 in Alamogordo, and Verbal enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and went to Korea. In 1962 they purchased Cortez Gas and started Scotty LPG, Inc., which their family continues to own and operate in Cloudcroft. Verbal and Lottie have been quite active in Cloudcroft, both having served on the School Board and the Village Council. They were also members of the Chamber of Commerce and the Sideliners. While they enjoyed traveling, Verbal also liked working on the family homestead in 16 Springs Canyon, while Lottie enjoyed her children and grandchildren. They are survived by two sons, Chris Scott and his wife Traci, and Tim Scott, all of Cloudcroft; a daughter, Wendy McCuiston and her husband Brent of San Antonio, Texas; and five Grand- children, Sara Petrzelka who is attending Texas A & M, Ryan and Clay Scott of Cloudcroft, and Jorden and Cole Scott of Cloudcroft. Verbal also survived by a brother, Ronald Scott of Alamogordo; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Scott of Cloudcroft. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a brother, Leonard Scott. Lottie is also survived by a sister-in-law, Wanda Hansen of Alamogordo. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by a brother, Bill Dick Hansen. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Cloudcroft High School Gymnasium with Wesley Lane officiating. The family requests that those attending the service dress casually. MILLER, S. PHILLIP
61, passed away February 2, 2002. Mr. Miller was a life long resident of El Paso, Texas. He graduated from El Paso High School in 1959, and attended the University of Texas at El Paso. In 1961 Phil was employed by the Newspaper Printing Corporation (publisher of the El Paso Times and Herald Post) as an Apprentice Pressman. He worked his way up to Pressroom Foreman, and then to Superintendent of Operations for the night shift. After twenty eight years of service, Phil retired from the Newspaper and, after attending El Paso Community College for specialized training in HVAC Maintenance, started his own business, "Phil's Fixit Shop". Phil specialized in plumbing, electrical and appliance repair, as well as heating and cooling systems main-tenance. He remained active in his business until shortly before his death. Mr. Miller is preceded in death by his parents, Sam Miller and Loretto Waddell Miller, and nephew, David Waddell Schillinger. He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Miller, sister Peggy Schillinger and husband Bill, nephew Kenneth W. Schillinger and wife Patricia, great nephew Kevin Schillinger, step daughters Tammy Jacobs and Barbara Castallone, grandchildren Mason Jacobs and Diana Castallone, cousin Carolyn De Lisser and husband Chrys, and their children and grandchildren. CAPELLAS, EDMUND JASSON SANTOS
was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 4, 1941 and left this world to join the Lord on February 6, 2002. Mr. Capellas retired as Chief Warrant Officer from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. During his tenure with the U.S. military, Mr. Capellas served in the Vietnam Conflict and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bonze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. He was then employed by the U.S. Department of Defense and served in Desert Storm as a Patriot Missile Defense System Specialist. Most recently he served as a Logistical Management Specialist. Mr. Capellas is preceded in death by his father Edmund Santos Capellas, and his brother, Thomas Capellas. He is survived by his wife Helga Capellas, mother, Mrs. Eloise Capellas, sister Judy Gerard and husband Kehau Gerard and their children Cher and Nicholas, daughters Ramona Beard and husband Andy Beard, Leilani Capellas, Nicole Smith and husband Bryan Smith and granddaughters Kirstie Beard and Sienna Capellas. Mr. Capellas will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, and "Opa". He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. 81, died Thursday, February 7, 2002. Born in Hanover, N.M. he resided in Sierra Blanca, Texas for 30 years before moving to El Paso where he was a longtime resident. Florentino is survived by his beloved wife, Eva, of 61 years; brothers, Santiago, Leo, Alfredo and 1 sister, Elvira Lopez. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a very special extended family which included his "Columbo", Grenuda, Bubba, Nannie, Junior, Joann, Ruly, Christe, Veronica and Anna. While serving in the United States Army during World War II, Florentino was honored with the American Theater Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, Purple Heart Medal and 1 overseas Service Bar. He was a Prisoner of War and a disabled veteran. Tino was retired from civil service, but explored many other endeavors to keep himself out of mischief. To those that knew him well, we knew that mischief was his favorite past time. He touched many peoples lives with great sincerity. Mrs. Crouch was a retired salesperson for Francis Bounds Dress Shop. She was an avid bridge player and was one of the best female golfer in El Paso in the 1950's. ENGER, GAYLE JANET PAYETTE
47, passed away on the sixth day of February 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. Gayle was born to Robert and Janet Payette on December 29, 1954, at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her father. Gayle resided in El Paso from 1981. A graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso in 1985, she taught kindergarten at Roberts Kohlberg schools for fifteen years. Gayle was married to Thomas F. Enger on July 29, 1987, at Waimea Falls, Oahu. She is survived by her husband and daughters, Marisha Gene Hicks and Alison Sarah Hicks and by her stepson Paul Thomas Enger. She is also survived by her mother and stepfather, Janet and Robert Perry, of Waupaca, Wisconsin, and by her brothers, John and Thomas Payette. MIRANDA, REV. MSGR. RAFAEL
69, passed away Friday February 8, 2002 in a local hospital. Msgr. Miranda was born on December 1, 1932 in Arnedo, La Roja, Spain. He received his Priesthood formation at the Augustinian Rocollect Seminary and was ordained into the Priesthood on July 25, 1956 in Marcilla, Navarra, Spain. In March of 1957 he was sent to Mexico where he served as a missionary priest for more than 16 years. He came to the Diocese of El Paso in 1973 and was named administrator and later Pastor of Cristo Rey Church. In February of 1982 he became Pastor of Our Lady of the Light Church. Msgr. Miranda was elevated by the Holy Father, John Paul II, to the rank of Monsignor on May 3, 1988. In September 1988 he was assigned to San Judas Tadeo Church where he was currently serving as Pastor. He is survived by his brothers, Rev. Fr. Angel Miranda and Jesus Miranda and wife, Paquita. Sister, Petra Miranda Miranda. Msgr. Miranda is also survived by his nieces and nephew, Marivico, Ana Christina, Conchita, Jesus and Soraya Miranda. Visitation will be Monday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at San Judas Tadeo Catholic Church. 95, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2002. She was a resident of El Paso, Texas, a member of Scottsdale Baptist Church. Mrs. Grantham attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, TX, the University of Redlands in Redlands, CA, and Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX, where she received a B.S. Degree in August 1962. She taught for five years in Southern California and for 19 years in Texas, 13 of them in El Paso, at Scottsdale and Edgemere Elementary School; she retired in 1975. She was a Civil Service Accountant for ten years, and a member of YRTA and NRTA. Mrs. Grantham was also a Veteran of World War II. Mrs. Grantham is survived by her son, James N. She was affection-ately known as "Granny" by all who loved her - a testament of her loving nature and her willingness to invite you into her extended family, whether you were her relative or not. 96, passed away February 1, 2002 in El Paso, TX. She was born on April 22, 1905, Antlers, Oklahoma, to Cyrus Lucius Harris and Nettie Garrard Harris. She spent her youth in Las Vegas, NM until she moved to El Paso where she lived most of her life except for a brief time in Chicago. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, and an El Paso Pioneer Families organiza-tion. She kept in good health by walking. She enjoyed traveling throughout the world and working in the gift department at the White House Department Store. She was preceded in death by her brother, Theodore Garrard Harris, Sr., and her sister, Charlotte Harris Bygnes. Thanks to her many friends who have visited and cared for her, especially Maria Gonzales, Paola Mendoza, and Lea Daniel. She is survived by nephews, Theodore Garrard Harris, Jr. and wife Rosemary; William Bradford Harris; and niece, Bettie Harris Hines and husband Walter. Cremation services have already been held. "El Hindo", 78, of El Paso, went to be with Our Lord on Sunday, February 10, 2002. A lifelong resident of the city, he was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic Church. He served in World War II as a member of the United States Army; and participated in the Invasion of Normandy Beach on D-Day. He was wounded in France and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Medal of Bravery for his actions. He was also owner of Aguilars Upholstery of El Paso for 47 years. JONES, JAMES E.
"Jim" 79, loving husband, father and grandfather went to be with our Lord on Monday, February 11, 2002. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lon V. and Betty Jones. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary Dell; son, Wayne Jones of Ruidoso; daughter and son-in-law, Bonny and Bill Schulenburg; and son and daughter-in-law of El Paso, Wes and Cindy Smith of Nogal, NM. He is also survived by grandchildren, Eric, Cody, and Justin Jones; Shannon, Krissi, and Matthew Bennett; Chris, Celina, Taylor, Shayla, Doug, J.R., and Drew Smith and Monty Key. He was a graduate of Austin High School and a WWII veteran serving in the Navy on the USS Lexington. In 1950, Jim took over his father's business, Jones Hat Shop, in downtown El Paso and ultimately moved the business to Montana Ave where it flourished until its closure in 1993. He supplied quality hats and western clothing to people all over the southwest. He was a prominent and respected business man and received the Stetson Hat Company's Retailer of the Year award in 1981. Jim was enlisted by Stetson to travel to Danbury, CT to create various hat creases that were made into mold, aiding western stores in the east. After retirement, he moved to Ruidoso, NM and opened J Bar J Western Store until his final retirement in 1999. He moved to Alamogordo and became a member of the Cuba Street Church of Christ. He was also a long time member of the El Paso County heriff's Posse. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 15 at Harding, Orr & McDaniel from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 16 at 10 am at Harding, Orr & McDaniel Chapel with Jim Morrow officiating. He served 28½ years in the United States Army and retired as a Msgt. E-8. He traveled the world over with his family, but decided to make El Paso his home. Joe lived his life to it's fullest during his 71 years. Preceding him in death was his beloved wife Anita M. Blackwell, one of his brothers, J.W. Blackwell, and his only sister Joyce Blackwell. "POP", "POP-POP", "Father", "Dad" and "Daddy" is survived by famly members, brother James Blackwell and his beloved sister-in-law Juanita Blackwell of Opelika, Alabama. JOHNSTON, ROBERT
passed away Sunday, February 17, 2002. He had been the owner of Smith- Johnston Plumbing in El Paso for forty-one years. He was born October 2, 1926 in San Angelo, Texas. As a child, he learned the plumbing trade from his father. A veteran of WWII, Mr. Johnston served in the Signalman Corps of the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. He was awarded a certificate of Participation in the Service School's Command Boxing Championship. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Mr. Johnston attended San Angelo College where he was elected to the Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity and a member of the National Honor Society. He brought his wife and child to El Paso in 1949, making this city his home for the remainder of his life. In 1962, Mr. Johnston obtained his Master Plumbing license and bought the Smith Plumbing Company, changing the name to Smith-Johnston Plumbing. For 41 years, he encouraged many local plumbers to get their state license and remained dedicated to quality service for his many customers. In 1983, he was appointed to the Plumbing Board of Exceptions by order of the City Council of El Paso. He earned the respect and gratitude of many people for his ability to tackle difficult problems and help others in his field. Survived by wife Maria Elena, daughter Vicki Diane Johnston, grandchildren Marissa L. Rocha and Luis A. Rocha II, great grandchild Larissa A. Silva, Rev. Gabriel A. S.J.,
died February 17, 2002 in Guadalajara, after a long illness. Father Silva was born in El Paso on September 21, 1926, attended Cathedral High School and entered the Society of Jesus on May 10, 1944. He was ordained on October 25, 1958. Fr. Silva taught at the Jesuit schools in Guadalajara, and Torreon. He attended parishes throughout Mexico, and San Diego, California. Preceded in death by parents, Antonio and Tomasa Silva, four brothers and a sister. He is survived by a sister, Julieta S. Escandon, 17 nephews and nieces, numerous grandnephews. "MATT" USA (Ret.), 79, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2002. First came to El Paso in 1949 and returned in 1958. He was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church, a Life Member of St. Raphael Men's Assn. And Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7563. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1961 with over 21 years of service. He received a Battlefield Commission in Korea in 1951. He was a veteran of WWII and Korean War. Among his awards and decorations he received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal plus letters of Commendations on many occasions. He was a Perpetual Member of the Military Order of World Wars. A Life Member of the Reserve Officers Assn. American Legion Post 58, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 8782, DAV Post #165, EPAC-NAVS. Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O.E. Past Exalted Ruler of the El Paso Elks Lodge No. 187. Served on the Handicapped Children's Board for over 20 years and became a Chaplain Emeritus of the Texas Elks Children's Services in 1999. While in El Paso, he was employed by Mission Funeral Home, Asst. Manager of Martin Funeral Home, Co-Owner of Hillcrest Funeral Home and Manager of Sunset Funeral Home - Carolina. Survived by his wife, Mary "Marie" Dadich; daughter and son-in-law, Deanne O'Rourke and William "Bill" O'Rourke; all of El Paso. Prescott, Margaret McDonald
aged 95, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2002. She was born in Belvidere, Illinois to Ada and Alexander McDonald. She was raised on a homestead in Stanford, Montana and attended college in Great Falls where she sang light opera with the Montana State Singers. She married Harry Prescott in Great Falls where they lived while he worked for Anaconda Copper Company and they began raising four of their five children. When they moved from Montana to El Paso, she began a lifetime of service to her community. For over 50 years, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served several terms as President of the Women's Association and as their Spiritual Life Chairman for many years. She was served the church as a member of the Board of Trustees, as a Deacon and as an Elder. She was also Historian and provided a report to the congregation for the Centennial Celebration. From 1967 to 1972, she worked as the Business Manager of the Church. She sang in the choir, often contributing her lovely soprano voice in solo for services or special occasions. She was a student of the Bible and taught Sunday School classes for all ages, from young children to the Guild Class. She was also an active community participant and strong advocate for Texas Western College (now UTEP). She served as President of the Women's Auxiliary for the college that assisted women students in furthering their education. She was also Chairwoman of the Women's Auxiliary to the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), which raised funds for scholarships and loans for metallurgy students. She was a member of the Panhellenic Council and an alumnus of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She was proud of her political affiliation with the Republican Party and often served as a precinct chair. She was selected as a delegate to the national convention during the Nixon and Kennedy campaign. She stayed interested in these passions of hers until near the end of her life, reading and listening to reports of the growth and success of these institutions. But her greatest love was her family and she took great pride in each and every one's accomplishments: of her son Harry and 4 daughters, (Joyce Dixon, Carol Schoepske, Margaret Hogan, Edith McArdle), her 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 4 great, great Grand- children. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1340 Murchison. Proceeding the services will be a reception at 12:00 Noon. Immediately following the service, internment will be at Rest Lawn Memorial Park, 8700 Dyer. Margaret's grandchildren are serving as pallbearers. LAJE, DR. LUIS JULIAN M.D.,
85, passed away Monday, February 18, 2002. Dr. Laje was a long time resident of El Paso and a member of the American Psychiatry Association, the American Medical Association, the El Paso County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Society. He was born in Cordoba, Argentina on August 11, 1916 and at age 10 was sent to Spain by his parents to start his high school education. After graduating from high school, at age 15, he returned to Argentina and acquired a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Engineering, in 1938, from the Universidad National de Buenos Aires with honors. He worked for the Argentine Government for 8 years as a Rural Agricultural Agent; then went on to manage the family winery/vineyards and operate his own farm. In 1950 he was awarded a full scholarship by the U.S. Government for a Masters program at Florida State University at Gainesville. He was the second man in the history of the university to complete his master's degree in two semesters with honors, then returned to Argentina to continue his work in agriculture. In 1958, at the age of 41, he entered medical school at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. He graduated medical school with honors in April 1965; 2 months later he immigrated to the U.S. with his wife and 6 children. Dr. Laje worked as a physician/psychiatrist at the Rhode Island Medical Center in Howard, R.I. and at Worcester State Hospital in Worcester, Mass. from 1965 to 1971. He and his entire family became United States Citizens in 1970. In 1971, Dr. Laje moved to El Paso to take a position as Director of Psychiatry at R.E. Thomason General Hospital. At age 56, he entered private practice to serve the people of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez until his retirement in 1988. After retirement, Dr. Laje continued his quest for knowledge through courses at U.T.E.P. on music, art appreciation and Latin-American literature making the honorary dean's list. His beloved children Maria Laje Romano and Juan Carlos Laje preceded him in death. Dr. Laje is survived by his wife, Maria Elena Laje, his daughter Lucila Laje Dorsett and husband Rollie Dorsett, of Austin, Texas, and his 3 sons: Luis Laje, Gonzalo A. Laje and wife Lori Laje, and Fernando H. Laje, all of El Paso. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. All his loved ones; friends and colleagues will dearly miss him. The world is a better place because of him. During his lifetime he was a diesel mechanic, fireman, worked on paving the Pan American Highway, promoting urban renewal in Ciudad Juarez and participated in theater and sports. KROHN, ALBERT MATHIAS
"TITO", passed away on February 20, 2002. Tito, a lifelong resident of El Paso, was born on January 2, 1925 to Edna Mathias Krohn and Edmund Harry Krohn. He attended Dudley Elementary School, Black Foxe Military Academy and the University of Arizona. Tito enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a member of the U.S. occupation forces in Japan following World War II. In 1950, Tito once again answered his country's call as a reserve officer in the Korean conflict. Tito's working career was guided by his entrepreneurial instincts. He headed Lone Star Builders, The Kool Kup Company and a firm that manufactured charcoal briquettes. His affinity for Mexico served as inspiration for the creation of Palm's Mexico Insurance in 1973. He headed the firm until he retired in 2001. Tito will be missed by the many people he came to know throughout his life in El Paso and in his travels to Mexico and points beyond. He was an avid traveler whose companion on so many memorable journeys was his wife of 54 years, Amelia, also his companion throughout the most rewarding years of his life. Throughout his life, Tito was active in many civic and fraternal organizations. He was a member of the El Paso Masonic Lodge number 130 and the El Maida Temple of the Scottish Rite for more than 50 years. Survivors include his wife Amelia Goodman Krohn and their children Lynn Krohn of Emeryville, CA; Matt and Elizabeth Krohn of Houston, TX; Doug and Monique Krohn of Basking Ridge, NJ; and James and Patricia Krohn of Dallas, TX. Amelia and Tito are blessed with 10 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held to honor Tito's life on Friday, February 22, 2002, at 1:00 P.M. at Temple Mt. Sinai, 4408 N. Stanton. TAYLOR, JEANNE Eage
88, of Austin, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002. She was born September 3, 1914 in Clifton, Arizona to Homer C. Hirsch and Florence Hirsch Johnston. Mrs. Taylor grew up in El Paso, Texas where her father owned a machine shop that repaired and manufactured custom mining equipment for customers in New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico. After moving to Austin, she graduated from Austin High School in 1932. She attended the University of Texas at El Paso in 1932 and 1933, which was then known as the "College of Mines". She transferred to the University of Texas at Austin in 1934, where she met Madison I. Taylor and they were married in 1938, after he graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering and began working for Seaboard Oil Company. They lived in Corpus Christi, Texas and Illinois until World War II, when Madison rejoined the US Navy. They were stationed in Grand Prairie, Texas, Pasco, Washington and Los Angeles, California. After the war, Madison went to work for Gulf Oil in Fort Worth, Texas, where daughter, Janice was born in 1947, and son, Alan was born in 1953. In 1954 they were transferred to Roswell, New Mexico, where they resided until 1972. During their time there, Jeanne and Madison were active with the Roswell Museum and the Great Books Discussion Group at the museum, as well as with the local arts and music activities. Jeanne worked as a volunteer in the Roswell Public Library for many years. After Madison retired in 1972, they returned to Austin, where they met, and became active members of the U.T. Ex-Students Associations. They were acting hosts at many of the Association functions, even going on overseas trips. During their time in Austin, Madison and Jeanne joined the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Jeanne was a volunteer at the Texas State Library and they enjoyed traveling, especially to France with Madison's sister Ruth White and her husband, Frank. They continued to travel even after Jeanne had multiple operations on her right leg, making their last visit to El Paso in 1997. Their first grandchild, Lilia Taylor, was born in December 1997 and Madison died in January of 1998. Jeanne's bereavement was softened by her granddaughter as well as by the birth of her grandson, Theodore Taylor in October, 2000. Mrs. Taylor loved books, and continued to read fiction and history until her passing. She was fond of travel, mountains, good tea, good wine and chocolate, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Taylor-Dillard of San Francisco, California; her son Alan taylor, daughter-in-law Jennifer Taylor, granddaughter Lilia Taylor and grandson Theodore Taylor, all of Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Madison. Starkey, James
Retired Colonel of Madison, Alabama, a retired U.S. Army Colonel died February 15, 2002. He was 60. Col. Starkey was a native of Massachusetts and lived in El Paso, Tx., before moving to Huntsville, Al., in 1990. He served in the U.S. Army for 26 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam war. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Air Medal, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Survivors include his wife Sandra M. Starkey; two sons, Scott D. Starkey and Brian D. SGM UNITED STATES ARMY RET., 79, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2002. Born in Charleston, SC on January 9, 1923 to Lex Bee Davis Sr. and Edna Floyd Davis, "Dave," as he was known to his friends, joined the United States Navy in 1940, transferring to the US Army in 1950, and retiring from service in 1972. The real estate community remembers him for his work with First American Title Co. in El Paso, Texas. As a young gunnersmate in the US Navy, he served aboard the Armed Guard Vessel SS Stella Lykes. Sunk by a German submarine, he spent 10 days in a lifeboat before landing in Portuguese West Africa where the SS Chateau Thierry rescued him. His Career in Artillery Air Defense brought him and his family to Europe and the Far East, along with tours in El Paso and Washington, DC. From a military family, Dave is preceded in death by his father, Lex Bee Davis Sr., USMC, and his maternal grandfather, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Edward Floyd, USN. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret, his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Kendall Walthew, his brother CW4 (ret) Charles O. Davis of Enterprise, Alabama, his sisters, Louise Fowler, Carolyn Ippolito, and Patricia Luker, all of Charleston, SC, and his sister-in-law, Anna Davis of Tulsa, OK. "DUTCH" 74, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2002. Born in Edgewater, Colorado, he attended the University of Colorado where he earned a Bachelors degree in Architecture. Lisle worked as a licensed professional Engineer in El Paso where he resided for the last 47 years. He served as a Gunners Mate in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer in World War II. Lisle retired from the El Paso Independent School District as Director of Facilities, where his responsibilities included the construction of many EPISD Schools. Mr. Schieman was preceded in death by his oldest son Paul Lisle Schieman. Lisle was the loving husband of Barbara, father of Pam Baker, Terri Treharne, Judy Amstater, and Todd Schieman of California. 91, died February 10, 2002 in Lubbock, Texas. She was a resident of the Perfect Peace Care Center in Wolfforth, TX. She was born October 29, 1910 to a pioneering New Mexico family in Glenwood, N.M. She made her home in El Paso for 70 years and retired after 30 years as the Civilian Supervisor of Finance at Ft. Bliss. She was an active member of the El Paso Women's Club and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Her special interest was the Arts and Crafts Club where her contributions helped to make the annual show a success. Mrs. Slaff was a strong supporter of the UTEP Basketball and Football programs being a season ticket holder for many years. She had the distinction of being the first woman juror and jury foreman in the County Court of El Paso. She is survived by her daughter, Carole Ann Adams McFerren of Henderson, NV; three grandchildren, Dr. Glen McFerren of Lubbock, TX., Scottie McFerren Leming of Murrieta, CA., and Greg McFerren of Kaneohe, HI; eight great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. MONTGOMERY, ZOE ANNE NEAL
Funeral services will be held at Trinity-First United Methodist Church on Friday, March 1, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. for ZOE ANNE NEAL MONTGOMERY who passed away Tuesday February 26, 2002. Burial will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. She was born August 14, 1921, in McAlester, Oklahoma to Maye Louise Rasar and William Caswell Neal. She demonstrated an early interest in music and by the time the family moved to Dallas, she was appearing in recital and on radio. She went on to study piano, organ and voice at Texas State College for Women. In 1944 she married John Willard Montgomery who preceded her in death. She traveled with him throughout his career as an Army Air Corps Physician. They came to El Paso when he assumed the rank of Post Surgeon at Fort Bliss. Zoe Anne continued her career in music performing in recital on the organ and piano in Santa Fe, Hanover College, Indiana, and in El Paso. She taught private students piano in El Paso for four decades, and also taught at Austin High School, Radford School for Girls, and Hillside Elementary School in the Deaf Education Department. In Santa Fe she served as President of the Girl Scout Council, served on the Board of the Children's Ballet Workshop, was President of the Junior Welfare Association, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the School of Practical Nursing at St. Vincent Hospital. In El Paso she was President of the Radford Mother's Association, a member of the American Guild of Organists and was active for many years in the El Paso Music Teacher's Association. She was a member of Trinity-First United Methodist Church where she served on the Television Ministry team and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Music Teachers National Association, Texas Order of Eastern Star and was a volunteer with the El Paso Police Department. Zoe Anne is survived by her daughters J. Anne Montgomery of South Bend, Indiana, Jane Montgomery Sinclair of El Paso, and three grandchildren: Jennifer Griffing, and Janet Sinclair, both of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Peter Buttigieg of Cambridge, Massachusetts. LORENTZEN, JOHN NATHAN LANE
88, Lt. Col., U.S. Air Force Reserve (Ret.), passed away Monday, February 25th, 2002 in El Paso. A native El Pasoan, he was born on February 17, 1914, attended Vilas School and graduated from El Paso High School in 1931. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1935 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific, and during the Korean War he served as Base Supply Officer at Macdill Air Force Base, Florida. After the Korean War, he returned to El Paso and took over his father's Merchandize Brokerage Business. He sold the business in the mid 1960's and then worked for the El Paso Independent School District and later was a public accountant. He was active in Rotary International from 1947-1977. Mr. Lorentzen was a 50 year member of El Paso Lodge No. 130, AF & AM, and the El Paso Scottish Rite Bodies, where he was especially active and nationally recognized for his accomplishments in the design of ritual costuming. A 33 degree mason, he was also a member of El Maida Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Col. Turner R. Sharp Chapter, Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, where he served as Chaplain for many years and was Past President in 1989. He was also an active member of the El Paso Art Association, serving as Treasurer from 1987-1994. He was preceded in death by his father Julius William Lorentzen, his mother Ada Vivian Lane Lorentzen and his sister Julia Lane Lorentzen Fink. He is survived by his wife Eleanor Lillian Medler Lorentzen, his brother Dr. Wayne Lane Lorentzen, his son Colonel Edward Julius Lorentzen (U.S. Army Ret.), his daughter Anne Elizabeth Lorentzen, his daughter-in-law Betty Lange Lorentzen and three grandchildren, Amy Irene Lorentzen, John Calvin Lorentzen and Emily Christine Lorentzen. Zimmerman, Emanuel S.
"Manny" 78, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2002. Manny was born in Kansas City, Missouri on April 25, 1923. He was a tech sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. As a radio operator and waist gunner on a B-26 medium bomber, Manny flew 66 missions over Germany and France, followed by several supply flights through the Himalayan Mountains. He moved to El Paso and married Irene Faye Levy in 1947. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage. A Master Plumber by trade, Manny founded Casa Plumbing Company in 1972. He remained an active partner in the company with sons Mark Zimmerman and Lee Zimmerman. Manny was a longtime Mason in the Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite. Manny is preceded in death by his parents Rose Raskin Zimmerman and Sam Zimmerman and by his twin brother Harold Zimmerman. He will be remembered by his friends and family including wife Irene Levy Zimmerman; sister Ellen Krasn of Henderson, Nevada; daughter Jeryl Marcus and son-in-law David Marcus, sons Jay Zimmerman, Mark Zimmerman and Lee Zimmerman; grandchildren Jessica Zimmerman, Joseph Marcus and Amanda Marcus, Shelby Zimmerman and Jake Zimmerman along with his nieces and nephews in El Paso, and Henderson, Nevada and Kansas City. Gavaldon, Augusto Leonardo
78, affectionately known by friends and family as "Leony", passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002. He was a life long resident of El Paso. Mr. Gavaldon was preceded in death by his parents Mr. Jesus Gavaldon Caballero and his mother Mrs. Angela Natividad Gavaldon; by his sisters: Laura G. Swain, Florinda Isa Gavaldon, Eva G. Martinez, Delia G. Guillen, and his brother Jesse Gavaldon. He is survived by his wife Bertha Alicia Naciff Gavaldon, his son Alberto Leonardo Gavaldon, daughter Rebecca Lorena Hancock, two granddaughters, Kirsten and Lauren Hancock; and also survived by daughter Chantal Armande Gavaldon of Fort Worth, Texas, a granddaughter Michelle and great grandson Damon of same city. He is also survived by his brother Alberto Jose Gavaldon of Ontario, Calif., two sisters Alma Alicia Shaffer of Reseda, Calif., and Selsa G. Reyes of El Paso. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was retired from the KTSM Station where he was present at the dawn of the television era. In that capacity he also was present at the installation of the first El Paso Aerial Tramway.

Willis, Clifton Adir
72, of Goode, VA, formerly of El Paso passed away Sunday, February 24, 2002 at Lynchburg General Hospital in Virginia. He was the husband of Hazel Willis. Born in Clintwood, VA, March 4, 1929, he was the son of the late Garland and Mae Farmer Willis. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and was a Vietnam Veteran. Exceptional at gardening, he was also a versatile handyman and was a member of the Forest Alliance Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Clifton A. Willis, Jr. of Honolulu, HI; Gary Wayne Willis and wife, Michelle of El Paso, TX; Donald Kalani Willis of Wichita Falls, TX; two daughters, Carol Mae Willis of Goode, VA; Shirley Gale Bowles and husband, Richard of El Paso, TX; five brothers, James T. Willis of Maryland, Bill Willis of Hurt, VA; Jack Willis and Joe Willis, both of Clintwood, VA; Martin Willis of Meadowview, VA; one sister, Betty June Mullins of Hindman, KY and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 26, 2002, in Whitten Timberlake Chapel in Virginia with Pastor Cecil Kramer and Pastor James Lee of Forest Alliance Church officiating. Funeral services in El Paso to be held Friday, March 1, 2002 at 8:30 a.m. in Restlawn Funeral Home, 4848 Alps, with interment to follow in Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors to be accorded.

"Danny" 46, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, February 26, 2002. Danny was a lifelong resident of El Paso and was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. He was an Appliance Technician with Regis Bernard Furniture. He is preceded in death by his father, David Guerra, Sr. and is survived by his wife of 10 years, Linda Guerra; Sons, Daniel Guerra Jr., Alex Gurrola, Daniel Gurrola and Rudy Guerra; Daughter, Becky Livingston; Mother, Maria B. Guerra; Brothers, David Guerra, Jr., Ramon and Ruben Guerra; Sister, Annette Salas, and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Thursday, February 28, 2002 from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with the Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home-Central Chapel. Funeral Mass will be Friday, March 1, 2002 at 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. born March 22, 1930 in Kearney, Nebraska. Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother has been called into the kingdom of heaven to live forever with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. After a long bout with cancer she rested on February 22, 2002 at 72 years of age. She was preceded in death by her loving husband and friend, Hal. Survived by her children, Bill and Lisa Fread, Cindy and Dave Wheeler, Debbie and David Hall, Kathy Fread, David and Jody Fread; grandchildren, Molly, Jody, Cherie, Nick, Amanda, Lee, and Samuel; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Bailey, Madeline, Brandon and Westley. Viewing will be at 11:00 a.m. March 1, 2002 with a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. at Harvest Christian Center 785 Southwestern Dr. by Pastor C. Eddie Lee. 81, passed away Monday, February 25, 2002 in Truth or Consequence, New Mexico. He was a longtime resident of Canutillo, Texas and was a member of the Catholic Church.
