Sat, 03 Mar 2001 From: William G.Kishbaugh < kishbaugh -at- coppernet -dot- net > My great-grandfather Henry B. King arrived in Gonzales on Oct.6, 1837, along with his brother John Rhodes King, the Johnson Day family and the Nichols family. The King brothers became members of Mathew Caldwell's company of Gonzales Rangers. My father was born in Seguin, but moved to Gonzales in January of 1894.His father ran a planing mill on St. James Street. As a small boy of 11yrs he met with a tragic accident in Gonzales. He lost his arm at a grist mill on the Guadalupe River, where his mother had sent him to get some corn ground. He had a leather whip tied to his left wrist and popped it at the water wheel shaft. The whip became entangled around the shaft and pulled him into it. I believe this occurred Aug.27,1897 and I often wondered if a local newspaper printed the story. I think the newspaper articles for that time period are missing. Anyway I have roots in Gonzales and wish to wish you all a Happy Texas Independence Day, even if I am a little late in doing so. Bill Kishbaugh - AZ
