Gonzales man dies after injury in jail
A Gonzales man died after being airlifted from the
Guadalupe County Jail in Seguin to a hospital in San Antonio.
Raymond Ramos Sr., 45, of Gonzales, died at 7:45 a.m.
Friday, May 21, at University Hospital in San Antonio.
The cause of death remains unclear. Officials at the
Guadalupe County Jail said he was injured in a fall from
an upper bunk. However, family members contend he was
beaten by other inmates, and the family reportedly
has retained an attorney.
Authorities said Ramos turned himself in because he
was named in a "blue warrant" accusing him of violating
conditions of parole. He reportedly was on parole after
being convicted of arson in Gonzales County.
Ramos was booked into the Guadalupe County Jail on
Thursday, May 13, and a medical screening on arrival at
the jail did not indicate any health problems, officials
said. The injury was reported to have occurred the afternoon
of Friday, May 14. He was transported by helicopter directly
from the jail to the hospital.
According to the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Department,
Ramos appeared to be having a seizure when detention officers
were sent to check on him. They said he had hit his head
during a fall, apparently from the top bunk. His injuries
included head trauma, a broken cheekbone and a broken
right arm. After admission to University Hospital, he
reportedly was placed on life support equipment due to
lung and kidneh failure.
While Ramos was hospitalized, authorities dropped
the charge of violating parole, and he was released from
the jail's custody on Monday, May 17. However, he remained
in University Hospital because of his condition.
An autopsy was to be performed Friday by the Bexar
County medical examiner.
