L.D. COOK L.D. Cook was born in Henry County, Georgia, May 22, 1846. At the age of 17 years, he enlisted as a soldier in the Civil War, serving two years. Then at the age of 21, he left Georgia and went to Arkansas. After living there two years, he was married to Miss. Isabelle McCollum, October 21, 1869. In the Fall of 1884, they moved to Texas, where they lived until his death. He was the father of eleven children, two of whom died in infancy. The remaining nine being permitted to be with him in his last hours. He had twenty-five grandchildren, all of whom were present, except three. He received a hope, and in the year 1890, May 4th, he united with the Primitive Baptist Church, and was baptized by Elder J.S. Newman. Soon after joining the church, he was ordained a deacon. He died August 08, 1912; age 66 years. Brother Cook was laid away the same day he died, Saturday evening, in the presence of a large concourse of people, many to mourn after him. Surely he was a noble man. His heart and doors were always open to the poor. He died in full fellowship with he church. He is gone but not forgotten. He will sleep, but not forever. We shall meet to part, no never, in that blessed home, where sickness and death are not known, but joy and love, forevermore. Home sweet home. May it be God's blessed will to prepare all of His sweet children to meet Him. So my prayer is that God may bless his companion and be her strong support until death. Dear children, try to live as your father did, and remember your dear mother, and be kind and good to her. "Children, obey your father and mother, for this is right." The writer tried to speak words of comfort to the family on that day at the cemetery. Written by request, G.W. White Note: Lewis Dawson Cook was a charter member and deacon of Ephesus Church (Clabbertown) and Mt. Zion Church (Nixon) in Gonzales County; and a member of the presbytery in the constitution of Cibolo Church in Wilson County.
