Welcome
Howard County is located in the high plains at the eastern tip of the Permian Basin and at the foot of the Edwards Plateau. The county was formed from Bexar County on August 21, 1876, and named for Volney Erskine Howard, a United States congressman from Texas in the 1840s and 1850s but not organized until 1882. There were no settlers until after the Civil War and the first were ranchers, including C. C. Slaughter's Long S Ranch.Resources
