Hudspeth is a large county in far west Texas and the county seat is Sierra Blanca in the south central part of the county on I-10. Sierra Blanca and Hudspeth County boast the only adobe courthouse in Texas. The largest community is Fort Hancock in the southwest corner on the Rio Grande. The river is the only reliable source of water.
Hudspeth was created in 1917 from El Paso County, which, in turn, had been created from Bexar County in 1850. First, it was to be called Darlington County, then Turney County, and the legislators finally settled on Hudspeth County, named for Claude Benton Hudspeth (1877-1941), a state representative and senator (1902-1918) and United States Representative (1918-1931) from El Paso. The county has become known as a place folks travel through to get to somewhere else.
