SAN FERNANDO

The San Fernando community wasted little time attending to the education of its children. By 1905 they were building a one room school building on Angle Road to accommodate the children's lessons during the week and a place for religious services on the week-ends. The earliest settlers making this community were immigrants from Scandinavia with names such as Hansvick, Hustad, Paulsen, Hansen, Simonson, Christensen, Fredrikson, and Johnson. As they were usually Lutheran, it is understandable that the first church built was the Lutheran Church.

Miss Nora Morgan writes in her article: San Fernando School and Community that many of the early families moved on to California about World War I being discouraged by a drought and two hurricanes. Miss Nora became a teacher in the school in 1916 the same year that a second room was added to the school building. She says she taught 1st through 4th grade, did most of the janitor work and built the fires on cold days. She earned $50 a month. The other teacher was Mr. Hayden, who was also the school principal.
