ADAMS CEMETERY

ADAMS CEMETERY
San Saba County
The Adams Cemetery was established in the early 1900s by William "Uncle Billy" Adams when one of his sons, W.G. "Pete" Adams was gravely ill and not expected to live. Uncle Billy went to the back acreage of his home place and chose an area that would be a burial site for his family. Pete recovered from his illness, but the site was soon to be used following the death of Archie Adams, son of Matt Adams, in 1905. This was the first burial in this cemetery.

The original fence is still intact around this cemetery. It was built circa 1928/1930 by P.M. "Boss" Wash and three teen-age boys: Neal Brown, Marion Wash, and Travis Glaze. The story goes that they scraped together three pennies and placed them in one of the corner post holes. This area is very rocky and these boys must have worked long and hard to put up this strong fence.

The cemetery was maintained over the years, in and around the existing graves, but was not completely cleaned until April 1975. At this time, Mrs. John "Billie George" McKinnerney and Bonnie N. Page began a clean-up and restoration project and gave the little cemetery a new face lift. These ladies sent out letters, made countless phone calls, got a group together, and started work.
It took about ten years to really get everything cleaned up and in good order with lots of help and support over the years from many descendants of the families buried there.

Today, this little cemetery is one of the best maintained and looked after cemeteries in the county. A cemetery association was formed and meets every year on the first Saturday after Mother's Day. In 1986, Mr. Louis Crump donated an additional 80 feet to the cemetery association to be used for a parking area. Shortly afterwards, this area was fenced and is a very welcome addition to the cemetery.
