OLD ALGERITA CEMETERY

OLD ALGERITA CEMETERY
San Saba County
ALGERITA CEMETERY
written by Alvis Lewis Bolton

The first burial that is know by tombstone dates is that of Melissas Wood, wife of Henry Wood. She was born in 1841 and died in 1875. There may be other unmarked graves a few years before this date of 1875.

One of the first burials was that of a Black servant who was whipped and beaten with a single tree (part of a harness used on horses to pull a wagon) by her owner when they were passing through the area. she died and was buried about the center of the east side of the cemetery, not far from the entrance. Her grave was an 'improper burial' and lies cross-wise to the other graves, running north and south instead of east and west.

Directions to Old Algerita Cemetery -

From San Saba, go west on Highway 190 in the direction of Richland Springs, drive about 8.3 miles to the community of Algerita, turn right on County Road 226. Continue on 226 through the community and cross County Road 204 (the old highway). After crossing the old highway, 226 continues north for 2.1 mile, then turns left. After making this left turn, continue for 0.2 mile, and turn right on County Road 228. County Road 228 continues north for 0.6 mile, then turns right. Immediately after turning right, there is a cattle gate on the left. Enter through this gate, proceed north for 0.1 mile, the cemetery is on the left.

Tom Wolf who made alist about this time last year (Sept 98) on a visit to the San Saba area. Tom said he has a good bit of information, but not much on the cemetery itself; other than that he believes it was on either John Duncan's (his g-g-g grandfather) property or Robert Jenkins Duncan's his g-g grandfather) property.
But Tom did write if he gets a query, he will see if some of his contacts in the area have more.
