BOWSER CEMETERY
Bowser CommunitySan Saba County

The old Bowser Cemetery and Varga Chapel Cemetery are located north of Richland Springs, TX near Bowser, TX.

New Directions suppied by Recent Visitor, Kathryn Boy

The new directions need to be as follows: from Richland Springs go north on Hwy 45, turn left onto Farm Road 765 toward Elm Grove. Travel approx 1.2 miles, just 100 yds past Bowser Community turnoff, turn right onto County Road 241(dirt road). Travel 1/2 mile to cattle guard, cross cattle guard and follow road as it winds around up the hill. After you pass a house on your left, take the next right turn onto another dirt road that will take you to the cemetery.

Able Bowser settled on the bend of the Colorado River in northwest San Saba County in 1850. The family bought land on the south side of the river which was soon called Bowser Bend and was the first location of the town of Bowser. After the little community location was flooded several times, it was moved to a new location two miles south of it's original location to its present location. Paul Varga donated the land in the new location for a chapel and a cemetery in 1890.

The old Bowser Cemetery was first called the Estes Family Cemetery and the first burial was on May 14, 1879. This old cemetery was vandalized at one time and many of the tombstones were pushed over and broken. The old Bowser Cemetery is presently on the C.B. Draper Ranch and can be accessed on a county road from County Road 765.
