| Dr. William J. Swann Obituary Dr. William J. Swann: Legend 1900-1997
William Joseph Swann, M.D. passed away Thursday, August 28, 1997, in the Sterling County Nursing Home. Services were at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 1, at the First United Methodist church in Sterling city, officiated by Rev. Bill Harris of Del Rio and former pastor of the church. Burial followed at Montvale Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ross Funeral Home. Dr. Swann was born October 27, 1900 in Wedowee, Alabama. He graduated from Randolph County (Alabama) High School in 196, attended the University of Alabama and received his M.D. degree from Emory University Medical School in 1924. He was a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity. He interned at Grady Hospital in Atlanta and Shreveport Charity Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1925 he began practice in Roscoe, Texas, later moving to Mississippi and Alabama. He married Opal Chumley of Bronte, Texas on June 14, 1926. He has resided in Sterling city since 1930. He served on Shannon Medical Center (obstetrics) and worked with several surgeons. Dr. Swann was instrumental in the building of the hospital here in Sterling City. He was active in the First United Methodist church, serving as chairman of the administrative board among other duties. He was a charter member and past president of the Tom Green 8 County Medical Society, and a life member of the Concho Valley Medical Society, as well as a life member of the Texas Medical Society, The American Medical Association of Family Physicians and was an honorary editor for the journal FAMILY PHYSICIAN. He was also associated with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. Dr. Swann has been a member of the Sterling County Hospital and Nursing Home Board, a district medical advisor for the Boy Scouts of America, a volunteer medical examiner for the Selective Service during World War II, a member, past master and 50 year Mason of the Sterling Lodge, a member of the royal Arch Masonic Lodge, and the Lions club. He served as County Health Officer. He practiced medicine in Sterling County until he retired in 1987. By Texas State Senate Proclamation, he was declared a treasured citizen of his town and state on the occasion of 91st birthday. In 1980 he was honored in Sterling city for 50 years of service to the community. He is preceded in death by his wife, Opal. Survivors include a son, William J. Swann, Jr. of Irvin, Texas a sister Nancy Griffin of Roanoke, Alabama; nieces Glenda Hale of Roanoke, Alabama, Sarah Risley of Durham, NC. Louise Leonard and Jo Collier of San Angelo, Lana Chumley of Fairfax, VA and nephews John Swann of Wedowee, Alabama, James Crosland of Miami FL, Wayne and J.F. McCabe of Robert Lee, Sam Cchumley of Katy, Texas and Victory McCabe of Ruidoso, NM.
