Welcome

Double Mountain, Stonewall County, TXGenWeb
Double Mountain is one of the county's most distinctive natural features, photo by Dr. Mike Hinze.

Stonewall County is in the north central plains region and the county seat is Aspermont. It was created from Young County in 1876 but did not begin organization until 1888. The name was chosen to honor Stonewall Jackson, a Confederate General. The highest population the county ever reached was over 5600 during the oil boom of the 1930s. Today, the population tends to hang around 1200 folks. It has a rich history of buffalo hunters and Spanish Explorers. Much of its rolling farm and ranch land is jaggedly cut by the Double Mountain and the Salt Forks of the Brazos River. In fact, Stonewall County offers more miles of scenic river bed than any other Texas County. The economy of Stonewall County depends mostly on oil and gas production and ranching. Some farmland is left in the county but a vast majority, some 50,000 plus acres have been planted to grass. [Texas A&M Agrilife Extension]
