This county is in need of a coordinator. If you can spare a couple of hours a month, please contact Carla Clifton to adopt this or another orphan county in TXGenWeb.

Introduction:

Welcome! This website focuses on genealogy and history pertaining to Tarrant County, Texas and is part of the TXGenWeb Project. We certainly hope that you enjoy your visit. Check back often to see what has been added or updated.

This website is continually growing as we upload new pages, but we still need your help!  Contact us if you would like to contribute Tarrant County material or if you would consider becoming a volunteer to perform look-ups from publications in your possession.

History:

Tarrant County, located in North Central Texas, was carved out of Navarro County in 1849. In August 1841 General Edward H. Tarrant ordered a military outpost built near Village Creek. The post, named Fort Bird after Captain Jonathan Bird, was abandoned in less than a year. In 1845 the area was beginning to be settled by the Peter's Colony. In 1849 Major Ripley Arnold selected the site at the confluence of the Clear Fork and West Fork of the Trinity River for a new military outpost which he named Fort Worth in honor of General William Jenkins Worth, who had won fame in the Mexican War. Birdville was the first county seat, but an election (reportedly rigged) moved it to Fort Worth in 1856. Read more about Tarrant County's history in the Handbook of Texas On-Line.

The TXGenWeb Project:

This site is but one of 254 county websites that comprise The TXGenWeb Project. TXGenWeb in turn is a part of The USGenWeb Project. Visit the above websites to locate partner websites representing other counties, states and countries, but keep this site bookmarked so that you can always find your way home to Tarrant County.

VOLUNTEER: There are always volunteer opportunities in becoming a County Coordinator in the TXGenWeb Project. If you are interested in adopting a county, please check out the Orphan Counties list and then contact the Orphan County Manager. If this is too much to bite off at one time, then contact any existing County Coordinator and ask how you can help them.  They may need someone to transcribe records, photograph cemeteries, or do Look-Ups out of books you own or have access to. The time you devote is up to you.

SURFING: We can always use another hand at Surfing TXGenWeb county websites. This is a program where volunteers surf a set of counties once a month to help select a website worthy of being named County of the Month.  Contact, the Committee Chairperson, if you might be interested. You do not have to be a county coordinator to volunteer as a Surfer. Best of all... This only requires about 2 to 4 hours per month of your time.  The County of the Month is judged based on this Basic Criteria.

Speaking of the County of the Month, if you think that Tarrant County TXGenWeb should be considered for this award, please put in a good word for us on the County of the Month Nomination Form. Thank you.
