Although Tex Carter had already provided us an inventory for Handley
Cemetery, it was decided to use both as each has something to offer. On a
number of stones, the two gentlemen interpreted the worn engraving
differently.
This inventory appeared in the May 1996 issue of Footprints, the quarterly
publication of the Fort Worth Genealogical Society. It is reprinted here
with permission.
The cemetery is located on the south side of the 6700 block of East Rosedale
Street (Spur 303) about 1/2 mile east of Loop 820 in east Fort Worth. It
is bordered on three sides by the TXU Electric Power Plant, is fenced on
two sides and the grounds kept in fair condition. About 10 or 12 graves are
marked with field stones or old markers which cannot be read. The earliest
marked grave is that of Jane E. Thomas (1832-1878). The last burial was in
1967. Several early residents (including Mr. Handley who died in 1906) have
been re-interred in nearby Rose Hill Cemetery.
This burial ground originally served the pioneer settlers of the Handley
community (named for Civil War veteran James M. Handley), which was settled
in 1876, soon after the Texas and Pacific Railroad built a line, to the area.
A church, constructed on adjacent land in 1882, was in existence for 48
years.
Ed. Note: When several names are grouped together, all were found within
a single plot.

Mrs. Homer L. Roper and Mrs. A. C. Lacroix, members of the Six Flags Chapter,
Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Worth, Texas, copied the inscriptions
in this cemetery in 1957. Their findings were subsequently published in a
compilation of cemetery records. In checking my listing with theirs, sixteen
entries found at that time are not visible now - the headstones probably
destroyed by vandals or other forms of destruction. Information contained
on these stones appears below. - Weldon Hudson
