The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers moved the graves from this cemetery
and four others during the construction of Benbrook Lake. The new resting
place was the Merinda Seminary Graveyard, now known as Benbrook Cemetery.
All of the information on this page was abstracted from the Corp of Engineers
1949 report titled "Cemetery Relocation Plan, Benbrook Dam and Reservoir."
The January Cemetery is a private burial ground, situated on privately owned property. This land is presently owned by S. W. Richardson. This cemetery is very old, but information was secured which reasonably identifies all graves to a limited extent. Mr. Joe W. Billington furnished the most definite identification information. The first grave to be placed at this location is believed to be that of a daughter of W. W. Warnell, the original land grantee. Two graves were identified as those of the parents of G. B. January, presently living at waco, Texas. Mr. January was less than a year old when his parents died and he has no definite knowledge concerning their graves. The remaining grave is that of a pair of twins, whose father was on Joe Holmes. One twin died at birth and the other about 12 hours later. Both babies were buried in the same grave. This occurred in August 1905. Mr. Billington was about ten years old when his parents moved to this place, but extenuating circumstances at the time impressed these happenings on his mind. Mr. Billington also verified this information with an older brother; also, various phases of this information were verified by other old time residents of the vicinity.
