Dr.
Isaac Lycurgus Van Zandt, 95, oldest physician in Fort Worth,
and one of the oldest in Texas, died at his home on Henderson
Street after being confined to his bed for several months. Dr.
Van Zandt was the third son of Isaac Van Zandt, ambassador from
the Republic of Texas to Washington, who played an important
role in negotiating the treaty for annexation of the Republic to
the Union.
Van Zandt received his MD from Tulane University and in 1867 married Miss Ellen Henderson of Marshall. The couple took their wedding trip in a horse and buggy, and the next year, moved to Fort Worth. His first residence was on the [then] site of the First Christian Church. About 1884 the couple lived at Thorp Springs where their children attended AddRan College, forerunner of Texas Christian University. The family was always closely associated with that university and church. In 1921, Dr. Van Zandt was honored by the Tarrant County Medical Society, recognizing him as "a man who has spent more than the average lifetime in ministering to suffering humanity." He was one of its founders when it organized in 1872 with six members. A physician to many of Fort Worth's first families, up until his death Dr. Van Zandt still prescribed for old friends and patients. Friends and relatives sat by his bedside and read to him from medical journals to which he still subscribed. The doctor was very active until 1924, but never recovered from a fall which broke his leg. Dr. Van Zandt carried on the tradition in his family for long lives - his mother died age 93. A sister, Mrs. Louise Cleough lived to be 90 and a brother, Major Khebler Van Zandt, banker and city builder of Fort Worth, died at age 93. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. E. J. Beall and Mrs. Ida Van Zandt Jarvis; a daughter, Miss Fannie Van Zandt, and three sons, L. H., W. L. and John H. Van Zandt, all of Fort Worth. |
