Laneri was born in 1858 in Genoa, Italy and came to America at the age of fifteen years. He first lived in New Orleans, La. with his brother, George. He had a job in a confectionery, sweeping, washing dishes and delivering packages - but after becoming more acquainted with American customs was soon was promoted to a regular job "behind the counter." Four years later he moved to Galveston and then to Marshall, Texas. He eventually became a partner with a Mr. Genochio in a fruit and magazine stand. They later opened a combination stand and hotel in connection with the Texas and Pacific Railway station in Fort Worth - it being known as the Genochio Hotel. In 1912 the railroad wanted them to take over concessions all along its line between Fort Worth and Marshall, but they declined and sold their holdings. The partnership was dissolved when Genochio died.
