Walter B. Cayce, 78, to be buried Monday

Funeral for Walter Bush Cayce, 78, retired president of South Fort Worth State Bank, retired Army Reserve colonel and retired credit manager of Gearhart-Owen Industries, will be at 4 p.m. Monday in the Trail Lake Church of Christ.

Burial will be in Greenwood.

Cayce, of 1807 Tremont, died Friday in a Fort Worth Hospital.

He began his 49 year banking career in 1914 at the age of 18, when he came to Fort Worth from Navarro County and stopped by a family friend's office to ask about getting a job.

"Well, Bush," a Star-Telegram story quoted the friend as saying, "let's step in to the (Fort Worth National) bank a minute. Maybe they will give you a job."

He was hired as a $20-a-month messenger boy and became assistant cashier before joing the Army at the onset of World War I.

After the war he remained in the Army Reserve and became an examiner for the Federal Depositers Insurance Corp., where he worked until World War II began.

He was finance officer at Ft. Wolters in Mineral Wells in 1943 and then accompanied the 89th Infantry Division in its European campaigns during World War II, earning a Bronze Star. He retired in 1946 from the Army Reserve with the rank of colonel.

When South Fort Worth State Bank was organized in 1947, Cayce left the FDIC to become the bank's executive officer and in 1956 became its president.

After retiring in 1963, he was credit manager for Gearhart-Owen Industries International, Inc. and worked there until 1970.

He was former trustee of Abilene Christian College, a member of Trail Lake Church of Christ and the Knife and Fork Club, former president of the Southside Lions Club, and a former director and treasurer of Panther Boy's Club.

He is survived by his wife, Marion, two daughters, Mrs. C.H. Davis, Jr of San Antonio and Mrs. B.J. Anthony of Fort Worth; brother J.A. Cayce of Hayesville, N.C., sister, Mrs. F.W. Farley of San Saba, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

His family has asked that memorials be in the form of contributions to the W.B. Cayce Memorial Fund at Abilene Christian College.
