Shep CemeteryHow To Get There: From US Highway 84-84 in Abilene, Texas, take US Highway 277 (South 14th Street) South 28 miles to the intersection with Farm to Market Road 1086. Turn right (Northwest) on FM 1086 and go 0.6 mile to the Cemetery which is on both sides of the road. Don't be confused by the small sign that indicates "private cemetery". It only applies to two of the graves in the "new section" of Shep Cemetery. GPS Coords: 32.14765, -100.113326 Located in far south Taylor County this cemetery is one of the "Pioneer Cemeteries". There are a number of unmarked graves but the area residents have done much to identify and obtain markers for many of the older graves. Thanks to Charles, what I preceived as the mystery of the two cemeteries (Walker and across the street, Shep Cemetery) is solved. Shep Cemetery consists of gravesites on both sides of the road. What was thought to be a private cemetery (Walker) is really nothing more than normal expansion of the existing Shep Cemetery. In the same expansion area there are two gravesites (J. D. Walker and W. E. Foster) that existed when the land for the expansion was donated by Carlos Walker. For simplicity these two graves have been included in the Shep Cemetery Listing. This cemetery listing has been updated through the year 2001. |
