History of I.X.L. District Number 27

District twenty-seven, now known as I. X. L., is the result of the consolidation, in March 1917, of the Nubia District Number Thirty-five and the Riney District Number Twenty-seven. The latter district was originally a part of the White Church District Number Ten and was separated that district in 1894. The two districts as they were at the time of consolidation were established in 1900 (District Thirty -five) and 1901 (District Twenty-seven). At the time of the consolidation a $2600 bond was voted for the district and the tax increased to twenty-two cents on the one hundred dollars. A neat, modern frame building of three rooms was erected on a half-way site between the two old schools and was well-equipped. The school was named by A. Y. Jones, and was called "I. X. L." because of the oddity of the name, which Mr. Jones knew applied to a school in Oklahoma. In about 1918, a fifty cent tax was voted in the district and State Aid received; the help that has come from this source for a number of years been very valuable and much appreciated.

As I. X. L. is one of the largest two-teacher schools of the county and has too many pupils for the number of teachers, plans are afoot for the increase of the tax to seventy-five cents for the addition of another teacher. Misses Hettye and Alvah Randolph, who taught a most satisfactory school this year, will be in the district again next year and the outlook is very promising.
