History of Potosi District - Independent

Potosi has the distinction of having as a citzen her first teacher. In 1887, Mrs. David Downing taught in her home the first school in what is now the Potosi Independent School District. She is still with us and is familiarly known as "Grandma" Downing, loved and honored by all who know her.

The first school house in the present Potosi district was built in 1887 in Lytle Cove and was known as the Lytle Cove School. Miss Annie Hansbrough taught the first school in this building in the winter of 1887-1888. The first trustees were Messrs. Dee Coffman, Stephen Cox, and William Skiles. The school grew very slowly at first; but later it grew more rapidly, and, in 1911, it was necessary to employ two teachers. The last school in this building was taught by Mr. Lee Cofiman and his sister, Miss Daisy, in 1915-1916, after which Lytle Cove and Potosi were consolidated.

The first school in the original Potosi district was taught in the Methodist church building by Miss Susie McLemore in 1891-1892 with about twenty-five pupils. The first school house was built in 1897; Mr. I. H. Parker taught the first school in this building. This school grew so rapidly that it was necessary in 1905-1906 to employ two teacbers - Mr. M. A. Williams and Miss Gussie Hancock (now Mrs. Lloyd Bynam). Mr. Cooper, Mr. Hinton, and Miss Merle Wharton taught the last school in this building.

The two districts above named were consolidated in 1916 under the name of Potosi Independent School, Potosi having become independent some years before.

The present six-room brick building was erected in 1920 one half mile south of the village. We now have a school of which are very proud. We are equipped for the teaching of Domestic Science; our general equipment for high- school work is equal to that found in many schools of greater reputation. Our present corps of teachers consists of Mr. M. A. William, Mrs. Gladys McCoy, Miss Delilah Hinds, Miss Ruth Holly; and Miss Zelma Key, and most efficient work has, been done under their direction.
