Mary Frances Harkins
From the April 7, 2006 issue of the Terrell County News-Leader, page 2:Graveside services were Monday, April 3, 2006, at Cedar Grove Cemetery for Mary Frances Corder Harkins, 92, of Sanderson, who died Saturday, April 1, 2006, in Ozona.
Reverend Lewis Allen, pastor of The Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church of Sonora, officiated.
Mary Frances was born December 23, 1913, in Austin, the first child of Terrell County pioneers Monty and Margaret Corder. She married Sid Harkins in Austin on May 19, 1932. Returning to Sanderson, they lived and ranched for the next 67 years.
Sid Harkins served his community in many ways including as Precinct Three county commissioner from 1943 to 1972. Mary Frances' interests focused around home, family, church and community. "Honey" loved studying the bible, gardening, and playing bridge. Needlework was her favorite pastime. She also liked to attend roping events with Sid and visiting friends near and far. While traveling to many places, Mary Frances was always happiest at home.
In 1998, Terrell County residents showed their appreciation to the Harkins for various contributions through their lifetime by honoring the couple on "Sid and Mary Frances Appreciation Day."
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ferdie Leatherwood, and her husband and best friend, Sid Harkins.
She is survived by her daughter, Sidney Dickson of Mason; a son, Monty C. and Lisa Harkins of Sanderson, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Cotton Dickson, Lincoln Dickson, Destiny Hooks, Jase Harkins and Lauren Harkins.
Preddy Funeral Home of Ozona handled funeral arrangements. The family requests that memorials be sent to a favorite charity.
