Cress Cemetery | Home |
Cress is an old family cemetery located in rural South central Titus County but it was used also for public burials. Cress, Carpenters and others are buried in the cemetery, but it has long been abandoned and is essentially lost. Reportedly, it was a large cemetery. There is no trace of any >graves except a large excavation where, most likely a body was disinterred and a broken foot stone with the initial A. M. engraved. This is presumably for A. M. Cress who, in Lynch Harper’s “Cemeteries of Titus County” states that “one monument carries this name and inscription on it: A. M. Cress, Age 40, He also includes a list of family members believed buried here:
To reach the Cress cemetery from the Titus County court house take Madison Street south for 0.3 mile to the intersection of Ferguson Road (US 271). Turn left onto Ferguson Road for 0.1 mile to the intersection with Jefferson Street (US 271). Turn right (South) onto Jefferson Street and proceed 3.8 miles to the intersection with FM 3417. Turn right (West) onto FM 3417 for 0.2 mile to the intersection with County Road (CR) 2200 (CR SW 41). Turn left (south) onto CR 2200 for 0.6 miles. The cemetery lies on the right side (west) of CR 2200 just a few feet from the road. Coordinates 33o11.513'N 094o59.300'W |
