East New Hope Cemetery
Home

This is a large and pleasant public cemetery, located in rural Southeast Titus county. It is across the road from the East New Hope Baptist Church. It is enclosed in a very nice chain link fence with a large archway sign announcing the name of the cemetery. The cemetery is well maintained and has been recently enlarged which should accommodate burials well into the future. Although the graves in the cemetery are some of the earliest in Titus County, very little history of the cemetery was found. The date of the earliest burial shown on a tombstone was that of Mary Madison in 1886. Lynch Harper in his “Cemeteries of Titus County” states that the earliest deed for the cemetery was in 1898.

Atypically, for such a cemetery, only one native stone was found in the cemetery and only one concrete block. This seems to indicate that such markers may have been removed to facilitate maintenance. Twenty seven granite plates were found during the survey. These plates must have been installed to facilitate locating known grave sites that were without monuments.

To reach the East New Hope Cemetery from the Titus County court house, take Madison Street south for 0.3 mile to the intersection with Ferguson Road (US 271). Turn left onto Ferguson Road and continue Southeast (the road becomes Texas Highway 49). Proceed 3.8 miles to the intersection of Chapel Hill Road (FM 1735). Turn right onto FM 1735 and continue for 1.5 miles. The cemetery lies on the right. Coordinates: 33o07.089'N 094o53.737'W
