Gladewater Cemetery
Home

Gladewater Cemetery is an old public cemetery located in rural North Central Titus County. It is quite large, fenced by a chain link fence and is well maintained. The Gladewater Missionary Baptist Church sits adjacent to the cemetery. The original land was donated by L. Mark Crooks and his wife Annie E. Crooks to the Spring Hill Baptist Church and graveyard and was called Spring Hill Cemetery. Some time prior to 1904 the church and cemetery names were changed to Gladewater. The name Springhill Cemetery was used by a cemetery located a few miles north of Gladewater and just off FM 1402. Gladewater Cemetery may have a claim to fame because the local people say that Arelda Jane Stevenson Sparks was the first white child born in Titus County and she is buried in the cemetery.

Some time in the past, a program of placing concrete blocks at known, unmarked grave sites was conducted. At least 95 of those remain today. There are other techniques that have been used in the cemetery to mark grave sites. These include: a cement block with the name "Geer" inscribed; a marble foot stone with the initials "M. H."; a molded concrete block with no inscription, three marble foot stones; a block of granite; three broken rocks, and a flat granite slab. One grave has a monument base but the monument is missing.

To reach the Gladewater Cemetery from the Titus County court house take Jefferson Street (Business US 271) north 1.4 miles to the intersection of Jefferson and Burton (access road of I-30). Turn right (East) onto Burton and continue 0.5 miles to the intersection of Burton and FM 1402 (Harts Bluff Road). Turn left (North) on FM 1402 and proceed 15.1 miles to the intersection of County Road (CR) 1750 (CR NE28C). The cemetery lies about 0.1 miles at the end of the road. Coordinates: 33o15.066'N 094o56.939'W

The first 39 persons are listed in the "Cemeteries of Titus County" by Lynch Harper as having been buried in this cemetery. No attempt has been made to verify the listing.
