Lev Old Cemetery
Home

This old cemetery derives its name from the earlier land owner who granted it as a cemetery prior to the civil war and therefore many slaves were buried there. Until recently, the land was in the possession of the Olds but the creation of the Welsh Reservoir and the power generating plant owned by SWEPCO caused the land to be sold to the power plant. This is a large cemetery with no public access. Access must be granted by the land owner of the surrounding property. It has greatly deteriorated with fallen trees, limbs, and underbrush effectively covering some of the grave sites. Many of the monuments have been broken by the environment with a significant loss of historical data inscribed on those monuments. Those monuments lying on the ground are suffering erosion by the elements. There appears to not have been maintenance for several years.

Every attempt was made to read and record the existing monuments but there is no estimating how many have been covered by debris and incursion of mulch and soil. In addition to those monuments listed marking grave sites, there were 7 unreadable funeral home markers (FHM), 30 native rocks (one appears to have been inscribed at one time), a convex shaped marble slab with no inscription and numerous depressions that mark other grave sites.

To reach the Lev Old Cemetery from the Titus County court house, take Madison Street south for 0.3 mile to the intersection with Ferguson Road (US 271). Turn left onto Ferguson Road and continue Southeast (the road becomes Texas Highway 49). Proceed 3.8 miles to the intersection of Chapel Hill Road (FM 1735). Turn right onto FM 1735 and continue for 6.1 miles to the intersection (from the left) with County Road (CR) 4865 (CR 25). Turn left onto CR 4865 and proceed for 0.5 miles. Currently, this will bring you to a pipe gate on the left that is the entrance to the estate of the land owner. The cemetery lies 0.7 miles down the drive and through the woods on the left. It is necessary to pass through a wire gap 0.3 mile from CR 4865. Coordinates: 33o04.012'N 094o50.374'W
