Marshall Springs Cemetery | Home |
Marshall Springs Cemetery is a medium sized cemetery with members of the Blackburn, Lane, Kirk and Keener families buried there in far Northwest Titus County. The location of the cemetery in its pristine setting and remoteness seems to imply it has more historical significance than is presented herein. Little is known of its beginings and its ending is yet to be determined since the possibility of future burials remains. In his “Cemeteries of Titus County”, Lynch Harper presents and iteresting history of some of the families and land transfers relating either directly or indirectly with the cemetery. Currently, however, the cemetery presents an interesting landmark with its chain link fence, the arch over the entry way announcing the name of the cemetery, and its well maintained grounds. The only negative presentation is the surface soil being washed away with each oncoming rain event. The only remaining grave site markers, not including monuments, were 14 concrete slabs. A broken monument with missing parts was found beneath the fence. It had the death date only of August 22, 1881. Subsequent investigation revealed that a Samuel Biggart died on that date. Mr. Biggart was born on March 21, 1852. His name is included with other monument inscriptions herein. The cemetery can be reached from the Titus County court house by going west on West 1st Street for 0.3 mile to the intersection with Edwards Avenue. Turn right (North) on Edwards and proceed for 1.6 miles across US 67 and under Interstate 30 to a fork in the Road. Take the right fork (Old Paris Road) and continue 1.8 miles to the intersection of US 271. Proceed through that intersection and continue on County Road (CR)1200 (CR NW 4) for 2.8 miles to the intersection from the left with CR 1220 (CR NW 18). Turn left onto CR 1220 and after 2.9 miles at the intersection from the right of CR 1230 turn right on to CR1230. This road then merges with CR 1165. The cemetery lies on the left of CR 1165 about 0.5 mile from the intersection of County Road 1220 and County Road 1230. Coordinates: 33o14.041'N 095o04.755'W
The following persons are listed in the “Cemeteries of Titus County” by Lynch Harper as having been buried in this cemetery. No attempt has been made to verify the listing.
