McCrary-Dorsey-West New Hope Cemetery
Home

The McCrary Cemetery, also called Dorsey Cemetery and West New Hope Cemetery is one of the most unique cemeteries of Titus County. Its uniqueness derives from the fact that some of the graves are marked with hewn bridge timbers. It covers a large area atop a hill just north of Dorsey Branch in far Northwest Titus County. At one time the West New Hope Methodist Church was in the vicinity of the cemetery but the church has subsequently been moved. There are no other structures in the area and nothing to indicate its presence. At the time of this writing, there is a metal pipe gate with metal wagon wheels marking access to the cemetery. No fence protects the grave sites and the area is grossly overgrown with large briars and underbrush. It has been abandoned for some time and unless there is intervention soon, the cemetery will become lost.

By speculation, there are numerous graves located in the cemetery but only 3 have monuments. Additionally, an unreadable Funeral Home Marker (FHM), 8 native stones, 1 carved timber and 4 straight timbers were found marking other grave sites.

The cemetery can be reached from the Titus County court house by going west on West 1st Street for 0.3 mile to the intersection with Edwards Avenue. Turn right (North) on Edwards and proceed for 1.6 miles across US 67 and under Interstate 30 to a fork in the Road. Take the right fork (Old Paris Road) and continue 1.8 miles to the intersection of US 271. Proceed through that intersection and continue on County Road (CR)1200 (CR NW 4) for 2.8 miles to the intersection from the left with CR 1220 (CR NW 18). Turn left onto CR 1220 and after 3.4 miles and just past the merge with CR 1165, the cemetery lies on the left of CR 1165 and approximately 50 yards on the crest of the hill.
