Springhill SE Cemetery
Home

There are two Springhill cemeteries in Titus County.  For the purpose of this research this cemetery will be referred to as Springhill SE (the other being Springhill N) since this cemetery is located in the Southeast  part of Titus County near the Springhill Missionary Baptist Church.  It is an old public cemetery that is fenced and kept in very good condition.  A sign beside the entrance gate declares that “Decoration Day” is held the third Sunday in May.  Contact 2310 Highway 11 W. Daingerfield, TX regarding cemetery business.

There are numerous graves in the cemetery that are marked with unidentifiable markers.  For instance there were 17 unreadable Funeral Home Markers (FHM); a steel plate with Mac Kengie written on it; 2 pieces of petrified wood, 20 bricks; 3 wooden crosses; a piece of concrete with “ a loving husband and a fine father” inscribed; a piece of broken concrete; 21 native rocks; a concrete block beside a FHM; a concrete block; and a FHM with J ....(unreadable) Smith; a FHM with Callie Smith; and a FHM with Lonnie Smith.  Piled in a corner of the cemetery was a top part of a monument with the name Mary E. Pitt.  There is a story extant that 2 monuments were removed from the Russel Cemetery and brought to Springhill Cemetery but were never installed.  Traditionally the Mary E. Pitt monument was one of those.  The other monument has disappeared.

To reach the Springhill Cemetery from the Titus County court house take Madison Street south for 0.3 mile to the intersection of Ferguson Road (US 271).  Turn left onto Ferguson Road for 3.2 miles to the intersection with FM 2348 (Union Hill Road).  Turn right (South) onto FM 2348 (Union Hill Road) and proceed 8.5 miles to the intersection with County Road 4690 (CR SE 2).  Turn left (East) onto CR 4690 (CR 2) for 0.2 mile.  Springhill Cemetery will be on the left, just a few feet from the road.  Coordinates 33o02.350'N 094o51.680'W
