Woodmen-Monticello Cemetery
Home

This is a large, public cemetery located a short distance West of Monticello in the southwest portion of Titus County. It is relatively new since the Bivens cemetery previously supplied the burial grounds for the Monticello community. When Bivens filled up the need for another location resulted in the purchase and use of the new Monticello cemetery by the Woodmen of the World organization. Subsequently the name Woodmen of the World cemetery received common usage and it was ultimately shortened to Woodmen Cemetery. The cemetery is enclosed by a chain link fence and is exceptionally well maintained. There is a noticeable lack of markers such as those found in other cemeteries such as stones, wooden markers or Funeral Home Markers. Only three unreadable FHMs were encountered.

There are two distinctive burial sites in the cemetery that bear mention. One site is an above ground crypt that draws attention to itself. Tradition states the interred wished to be buried sitting up in his favorite rocker. Although the crypt seems large enough to accommodate his wish, supposedly the wish wasn’t granted. Another grave site is marked with a monument which bears a photograph of the interred showing his corpse ensconced in the casket. The story is that the photograph is evidence that the interred’s statement when he left Titus County that he would only return “in a pine box”, ie. his casket is verified.

The Woodmen Cemetery is divided into four distinct parts by the access within the cemetery. A column labeled “SN” is provided to assist the search for a specific gravesite. These parts are designated Northeast (NE), Northwest (NW), Southeast (SE) and Southwest (SW).

To reach the Woodmen Cemetery from the Titus County court house take West 1st Street west for 0.5 mile to the intersection with Ferguson Road (US 271). Proceed through the intersection (the road designation will be Farm Road 127) for 8.1 miles to the intersection from the right of County Road (CR) 2630. Turn right onto CR 2630 and proceed for 0.4 mile (there is an apparent fork in the road - take the left fork). The cemetery lies on the right side of the road. Coordinates: 33o 05.838'N 095o 05.473'W.
