Yancy Cemetery is now known as the Center Grove Cemetery. It is given preferential treatment here because of the interesting story of its origin. Further, the cemetery is specifically referred to in a deed from J. H. Yancey to C. C. Carr date March 10 1899. Mr. David Yancey, Sr. who had tried to raise an African-American child orphaned when its mother was struck by lightening during a wagon train rest stop in the area. The child’s mother and others were transiting from Tennessee when they stopped to cook supper. As the mother was cooking, the lightening struck and took her life. The Yanceys were unsuccessful in keeping the child alive and upon its death they buried it in what became known as the Yancey cemetery and then the Center Grove Cemetery.
