Genealogy and Family History of John Henry King
I, J. H. King (John Henry), was born in Marion County, Tenn., in one mile of Jasper, the County site. My father was Carter Beverly King, and my mother was Nancy Caroline King (nee Ferguson). Father was born August 4th, 1813 near Maryvi11e, B1ount County, E. Tenn. Mother was born in Old Washington, Ray [should read Rhea] County, E. Tenn. They were married at Spring Place, Ga., July 24th, 1836, while my father was in the U.S. Army Cavalry, Absolum Bishop's County, Berry Bishop's Regt. Gene Jessups Comdg. under Gene in the Seminole and Florida Indian War. My Paternal Grandfather was John King born in Lynch, Va. in 1774 of an English father (Revolutionary soldier from the beginning to end). His name was Harry King. His wife was Bettie Brown, an Irish woman. Their children all died without issue but John. Great grandma died at Lynchburg, Va., and great grandfather and grandfather moved with their [slaves] to near Knoxville, Tenn. about 1812. Late in Aug. 1812, Grandfather volunteered in Gen'l Jackson's Cavalry under Gen'l Coffey in the Creek and British war and was in all the engagements with the Creeks under Gen'l Jackson (with Davy Crockett and Sam Houston) til the battle or the Horseshoe where my grandfather was wounded in a cavalry charge, but set his horse, til the battle was over, and fought with the front rank. Was then discharged, went home, and lived in Tenn. til the fall of 1851, when he with his wife, his son John, and his daughter Bettie McYaughy and her husband Samuel McYaughy and their family moved to Texas, on Horse Creek, where we lived. My grandmother King was born in Val, near Lynchburg, her name was Bettie (Eliz.) Horden; her brother, born in 1782 was George Horden--her people were English. My father had four sisters and two brothers. The sisters were Mahaly. married Jo. Dyer. Harriet -married Stephen Groves. moved to Waldrow. Ark., and raised a family--James. Jno., Mark and George Groves, and two or three daughters--Nancy who married Jas. Strickland and moved to Fayettevi11e, Ark., where she died in 1852. Bettie, before mentioned, died Dec. 27th, 1855, in Texas. Henry King married Lizzie Johnston, widow of Tobt. Johnston of Cleveland. Tenn. She had two chl1dren, Polina and Jas. H. Johnston. Polina was the mother of Judge Robt. M. Lusk, late of Bouhaw, Texas, but now of California. J. H. Johnston resides now at Omaha. Texas. John H. King, my other uncle King, married Miss Sallie Stephens of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, in 1860. They raised three children: Peggy, Bettie, and Josh. Peggy married Al Smart of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Bettie. who married Jo. Hill of Tyler, Texas. Josh who married a Miss Mary Gladueg, now resides at Paula Valley. I. T., like his father, is a jeweler. Uncle J. H. King for whom I was named was County Treasurer of Titus County from 1856 to the close of the war in 1865, was re-elected in 1866, removed by order of U.S. General Comdg. in 1867; was re-elected again in 1873 was re-elected 't11 1884 when he resigned. My uncle Henry King had three children. Doc (Wm. Sergort) who was killed by my side in the Battle or Murfreesboro, Tenn., Dec. 31st. 1863, unmarried. Loubenia married W. D. L. Burton. She died in the ‘90’s. My uncle Dr. Henry King died at Omaha, August l0th. 1873. Aunt Sallie King died in 1872. Uncle John King died January 1897 at Mt. Pleasant, Texas. My maternal Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother, Jas. A. Ferguson and wife, were murdered by the Tories in South Carolina during the war of the Revolution. They had two sons in the Army—Mose. and Wm. My grandfather Jas. Alexander and his little sister (6 or 8 years old) they survived. My maternal grandfather, Jas. A. Ferguson, was a wagon master in the war of 1812 under Jackson; he died near Jasper, Tenn., in 1825. He and Miller Francis married sisters. Henry's Francis was for several terms Treasurer of the Tenn. before the Capital was moved to Nashville, and one term afterward. (Grandfather’s first wife died and he married a cousin to his first wife, a Henry, Nannie C. Henry, daughter of John and Nancy C. Henry nee Young.) My grandmother Ferguson had but two children, Pleasant Miller and my mother, he married Margaret Rolin, had two chi1dren—Carrie, and Mary. Carrie died unmarried. Mary married Jess Bynum; he died, and she is now married to Geo. Adams—a miner of Col. P. M. Ferguson died June 1847, two miles south of Omaha, Texas. My father and mother had 11 children--Marg. E., born Nov. 27th, 1837. in Tenn; Pleasant Miller born in April 28,1839 in Tenn. --he died in Texas June 1847. Harriet Jane was born Feb. 22nd, 1841 in Tenn. J. H. (myself) born Dec. 25, 1842 in Tenn. James H. born in Dec. 24th, 1844 died in . . . . . . Chas. Wesley, Nov.20th, 1846 in Texas, three miles south of Omaha, Texas. He married Josie Hilliard, in Bosque Co., Texas. They had two children—Sam and Audie. Josie died at Kemp, Texas, in 1894. Chas. W. died at Pauls Valley in 1904; Wm. M. January 18th, 1849 in Texas. He married Josie Tandy of Hood Co. Texas; they live at Seymour, Texas. Andrew J. born April 26th, 1851. He 1ives at Paluxy, Texas. He married Mattie Mills, Gid Mills daughter of Hood Co. Sam M. King married Lizzie Meek of Hood County, Texas. They live at Morgan Mill, Erath County, Texas. Corten B. January 17th, 1857--died Dec. l0th, 1873. Martha C. July 18th, 1858--died Dec. 1862; Mary E. married J. H. Johnston, Nov. 27th, 1856. Harriet Jane married Robt. Holden of Somerville County, Texas, resides now at Glass P. O.. I married Mattie J. Ward, Jan. 4th, 1871 in Titus Co., Texas. She died Jan. 2, 1906 in Cumby, Texas. My children are Henry C., Mary C. Cross--wife of R. K. Cross and Miss Birdie. This January 23rd, 1906 at Cumby, Texas. Miller Francis married my mother's aunt. He had a daughter who married Capt. Geo. Rice, and one who married Hopkins L. Turney; who had a brother--Pete Turney. Hop. Turney made a prominent lawyer, was Dist. Att'y, and went to the U.S. Senate, and died at Winchester, Tenn. of apoplexy, while a member of the U.S. Senate in the 50's, just prior to the Civil War. Pete Turney, his son, Col. of the lst Confederate Tenn. Regt. in Lee's Army. After the war Chief Justice of Tenn., and afterwards, Governor of Tenn. for two terms. He had a brother Hopkins L., who was Lien't Col. of a Tenn. Regt. in the C.S.A. My aunt Bettie McGaughy had eight children--Henry C. , Wm. G. and John (twins) , Margaret, Howard, Harriet, James Porter, and Mary. Henry C., the eldest and seriatim. Howard died in Texas May 26th 1856, Uncle Sam moved back to Ga. near Dalton in Oct. 1856. Raised his family and died there after the war in the 70s. Henry lived and died at Varnel Station leaving a family in the 90s. Jno. died in a federal prison during the war of the 60s. Wm. G. moved to Tex. in 1870. He lives in Denton Co., Texas. Jas. P. has never married. He lives near Decatur, Texas. Margaret married a Simmons --some of the Liver Regulation Simmons, and resides at Sherman, Texas. Harriet married Speer; he is dead, and she resides with her family at Varnel's Station, Ga., near the Tenn. and Ga. State line. Mary married . . . . .Hedrick, has raised a family, and resides at Memphis, Texas. Peggy Smart and Al Smart of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, have one child, Annie, who married Albert Tobb of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. |
