Glasscock was created from Tom Green County in 1887 and named for George W. Glasscock, a Texas Revolution officer and Texas legislator. It was formalized in 1893 with only three tiny settlements along Lacey Creek - Garden City, Dixie, and New California. New California was selected as the county seat but, after Garden City was abandoned, New California was renamed Garden City. The county has never had more than 1500 residents. It started as ranchland and didn't see many farms until after 1900. A severe drought in 1917-18 severely depressed that endeavor but, today, the county's main industries are ranching, farming and oil. The Garden City Gazette, a weekly paper, was published between 1905 and 1913. Another paper, Lee's Reporter, was also published for about two years during the same time.

Garden City is almost centered in the county and Saint Lawrence is almost centered in the southern quarter. Lees is in the far north central area, about 15 miles north of Garden City.
