Welcome to Irion County, TXGenWeb!
Irion was named for Robert Anderson Irion, physician, surveyor, soldier and Republic of Texas secretary of state. The county is located in southwest central Texas and the county seat is Mertzon in the eastern quarter of the county. It's largely a ranching community with cattle, sheep and goats with a few farms and some oil wells. It was created and organized in 1889 from Tom Green County with Sherwood as the county seat. The seat was moved to Mertzon in 1936 largely due to the railroad passing through Mertzon.- On-Site Information
